Dear Chocolate Box writer

Dear Chocolate Box writer,

I am so thrilled to have you writing for me! I have pretty consistent tastes across fandoms, so I hope that some of the prompts below strike your fancy. Regardless, as long as you have fun writing, I guarantee that I will adore reading the fic! More likes and prompts re: my requests are below. Rest assured that every single request below is a bullet-proof link for me, so whatever we matched on, I am sure to devour & adore more fic for these characters. Happy writing!

comments

Dear Yuletide Author

Dear Yuletide Author,

Thank you so much for writing for me! Yuletide is my favourite time of year and I am really looking forward to reading my gift. You’ll see some common threads in my requests, and I hope they make sense. Basically I love fics that stick close to canon, I love found-family tropes and the comfort part of h/c. (I’m comfortable with the hurt part as well, as long as it isn’t too graphic or lingered over.) I’ve requested shippy prompts for the most part, but if I had to choose between shippiness and gen h/c, I’d choose the h/c, hands down. Basically - if I love a character, I want them to suffer (a little), and then be looked after (a lot).

My DNWs are also variations on a theme: please no graphic non-con (although references to it are fine), and please no AUs such as mer-people, mpreg, A/O/B, or anything that fundamentally changes the universe the canon is set in. Canon-divergent stuff is fine, though. I also like Maggie (TD) and Becky (Askewniverse) so if you include them in the fic, please don’t hurt them or have something awful happen to them, an amicable split is fine.

I haven’t written a long and detailed letter this year because I’ve come to the realisation that my likes and requests are actually pretty consistent year-on-year, even if the fandoms and character change somewhat. I like complicated, morally grey characters, and I like sarcastic banter. I like found-family and h/c. And - if you’re writing sex scenes - I like a focus on kissing. It turns out I’m a simple soul at heart, and I just like seeing my faves be happy & loved.... after a bit of suffering, of course. Anyway, my Yuletide tag links to all my letters over the years if you want to get a flavour of what I have asked for and loved in the past, but I feel like this pretty much distils it down to the fundamentals. I’m a simple soul at heart!

Please have fun writing, and I am sure to enjoy whatever you come up with.

True Detective: Rust, Marty

I watched S1 of True Detective this year (late to the party, I know) and honestly, it blew my mind. I am fully on board with what a great character Rust is, and I was fascinated with his relationship with Marty. I’d love to see more of Rust being taken care of, and slowly opening up to Marty. I feel like the show laid them open to each other to such an extent that they would have to work to build up their walls - to the rest of the world, if nothing else - before they could return to some semblance of normality. I don’t have anything too prescriptive in mind here - I’d love something close to canon, that develops their relationship. I love first-times, h/c, deep links between messed up people, and found-family. The show is unrelentingly brutal and I’m not expecting sunshine and roses, but please don’t break them beyond repair.

Studio 60: Jack Rudolph

I went back and forth on whether to ask for Jack AND someone, but I realised that I was primarily interested in Jack himself and his relationship with the wider S60 ensemble. I feel like we only see him interact with them when something has gone wrong and he is trying to find a solution, sometimes at a cost to himself. I’d love to see them standing up for him. Maybe something goes wrong with the court case? Maybe there is some sort of scandal and the media has a field day? Maybe his drinking isn’t as under control as he pretends? If you’d like to write shippy fic that would also be very welcome. I don’t have a preferred pairing, I’d be happy seeing him with anyone, but some suggestions - maybe Simon, following on from their rapport at the end of the series? Jordan and/or Danny, given that they’re the closest to him? But I’d be happy with anything, really. As before my bullet-proof links are found-family, h/c, and grumpy arseholes being looked after.

Askewniverse: Dante, Randal

Speaking of grumpy arseholes... I am still, 15 years later, astonished that Randal managed to tell Dante that he loves him (even if I don’t quite believe his assertion that it’s a purely heterosexual way). I miss these utter idiots. Who would have thought that Randal would be the more well-adjusted of the two? I’d love to see a getting-together story (with Becky, if you like, or hand-waving an amicable split if you’d prefer). Alternatively, I will always any and all h/c, and I feel like we haven’t seen Randal vulnerable (beyond that one scene with Dante). Having something external & upsetting force that openness would be interesting. Maybe playing off the alt ending to Clerks (only this time Randal is the one caught in the robbery) or something less eventful but still upsetting (a family argument, or a break-up) - basically forcing a crack in that facade and actually having Dante do some work to cheer him up or reach him or connect with him somehow. I don’t really mind whether you keep it light and fluffy as the canon, or if you go a bit darker, but please don’t damage them beyond repair.

comments

New York, I am in you!

So, I moved on Monday. I am living in a hotel for the time being, but I was thinking... Brooklyn? Brooklyn's nice, right? I should go and have a look around in the next few weeks and figure this out.

Starting work tomorrow, slightly freaked out. But, you know, I'll figure it out.

Also, my brother got engaged yesterday! His gf proposed. :D

Anyway, sorry for, you know, not being around at all, and having to bail on basically everything. I literally had to move continent and start a new job and, well, everything. But I'm gonna be living in the hotel for I guess at least a month or two, so will try to be online more, for my sanity if nothing else.

Also, if there's any fandom ppl based in NYC who can offer advice / want to meet up for coffee in the next couple of months, that would be awesome.

comments

Dear Chocolatier

Dear Chocolatier,

I had such a great time at chocolateboxcomm last year that this year I decided to go all-out on prompts and requests. The below are only there to give you a kick-start if you're wondering what sort of things I like, please don't feel bound by them if inspiration strikes somewhere else! I've requested fanfic for all.

Likes: snark! canon-compliant scenes, messing with power differentials, enemies/antagonists forced to work together, insecurities being addressed, characters owning up to screwing up, apologies, trust. Protectiveness / family / team / squad feelings. People having each others' backs. "Enemy Mine" / "Only I get to fight him!" tropes. First-times in shippy fic, or getting-together in shippy fic.

Kinks: first times, someone being fussed over who normally doesn't get that in canon, first-times, hair-pulling or neck-biting, first times! FIRST TIIIIIIMES. ALSO: sloppy blowjobs, semi-realistic sex, all the kissing IN THE WORLD, finger-sucking and general hand-fixation.

DNWs:

1) Universe-altering AUs such as coffee-shop, high school, soulbonding/soulmates.

2) Some sex-based squicks - underage, scat, watersports, other non-sexual bodily fluids, heavy BDSM, daddy kink and role play, omegaverse, mpreg, non-con/rape (dub-con and sex pollen are fine).

3) Others: please don't kill off any of the requested characters, or any of the canon's named characters outside of canonical deaths (any bad guys and OCs are fair game).

REQUESTS

( Babylon 5 )

( Star Trek: The Next Generation )

Dear Yuletide Writer...

Thank you so much for writing for me! Yuletide is the fic exchange I try to do every year, and it's such a great experience that I guarantee whatever you come up with will make my day. I've included some broad likes/dislikes below to help out. You can also see what I've written in my letters in previous years as I've been pretty consistent year on year.

Likes
1. Gen, slash, het, whatever. I’ve requested pairings in my prompts below, but if any of the pairings don't work for you, rest assured that I love drama and significant looks just as much.
2. Plot! I do love me some plot. Failing that, angst! Also - humour! Fun! (That doesn't narrow it down, does it?)
3. First-times in shippy fic. I tend to be less interested in a couple after they have been happily settled or wrapped up in each other, and a lot more interested in how couples get together. If it's an established relationship, I like the conflict in the relationship - maybe something unresolved between the couple, or some bone of contentious that could drive them apart.
4. Conflict. I like change in fic - change in relationships, change in preconceptions, change in situation, good old-fashion action-adventure - and having characters disagree or take opposing sides.
5.
Fic exchanges & recs

A very quick but glee-filled post squeaking about all the lovely goodies I received for fic swaps over the last few weeks! They are all fantastic and I want to thank my lovely, lovely authors for the amazing gifts. Go, give them some love! *heart eyes emoji*

I've already posted my smutswap fic (a Quark/Odo fic, (love is) the cherry on top), and I ended up defaulting on waybackexchange due to RL stresses. But I did write something for hurtcomfortex . It ended up being MCU again, Tony/Rhodey -

trust fall (4403 words) by kangeiko
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man (Movies)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: James "Rhodey" Rhodes/Tony Stark
Additional Tags: Canon Injuries, Arc Reactor Issues, Post-Iron Man 1, Tony Stark Needs a Hug, Hurt Tony Stark, James "Rhodey" Rhodes Needs a Hug, Tony Stark Has A Heart
Summary: It could have been worse. Tony might have decided he’d do this on his own.

*

And now, for my gifts! First up is smutswap , where I received some delicious Snape/Black ficcage -

Coreum (3471 words) by BiffElderberry
Fandom: Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Sirius Black/Severus Snape
Additional Tags: Anal Sex, Sex Pollen, First Time, Anal Fingering, Blow Jobs, Overstimulation, Enemies to Lovers, Barebacking, Semi-Public Sex
Summary: Coreum flowers, specifically the pollen was used in love potions, Severus reminded himself, trying to focus on the recipe and uses, in order to distract himself. Particularly in potions designed to cause a lust filled response. Exposure to the pollen without proper protection would result in an elevated hormone level and cause the infected to desire to shag. He could definitely feel that. He also knew that the best way to cure it was to have sex - a cruel twist of fate in his opinion as most people working with coreum flowers were making the potion because they couldn’t get laid.

For waybackexchange I was gifted a lovely and adorable Quodo fic which really lifted my spirits -

Unwanted Help (1424 words) by rosied
Fandom: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Odo/Quark (Star Trek)
Additional Tags: Pre-Slash, Frenemies, Enemies to Friends
Summary: Sometimes you need help whether you want it or not.

And then there was the hurtcomfortex! How helpless Blake must have felt on that planet's rocky surface, holding his companion's unconscious body on a deserted road waiting for the Liberator to orbit back into communications range, hoping against hope that Avon doesn't bleed out before Jenna can transport them both back to safety.

Haven (1163 words) by Serenade
Fandom: Seafort Saga - David Feintuch
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Nicholas Seafort/Edgar Tolliver
Additional Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Whipping, Hiding Injury To Keep Other Character From Going Ballistic, Guilt over Other Character's Sacrifice, Angst with a Happy Ending, Extra Treat
Summary: Tolliver needs just one thing from Nick.

Visions, Ilusions, and Nothing (Everything) to Hide (2782 words) by donutsweeper
Fandom: NCIS
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Anthony DiNozzo & Jethro Gibbs
Additional Tags: Loss of Trust, Trust Issues, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Post-Episode: s08e05 Dead Air
Summary: Tony could really use some backup right about now....

comments

<strike>Did anyone recently write some meta they intended as a gift for someone in the B5 fandom? Because I've received some here, but I'm fairly sure it was mis-linked and it was intended for someone else. I don't recognize the creator, either. (It's meta about the Earth-Minbari war with some elements from the script books I think?)</strike>
Edit: mystery solved!
*

Job-hunting continues, my levels of stress are somewhere in the stratosphere, please send more spoons.

comments

Space Swap & Smut Swap reveals

I wrote fic!

For space_swap , I wrote -

gæð a wyrd swa hio scel (27094 words) by kangeiko
Fandom: Thor (Movies), Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Hela/Loki (Marvel), Loki/Thor (Marvel), Hela/Loki/Thor (Marvel)
Characters: Hela (Marvel), Loki (Marvel), Thor (Marvel)
Additional Tags: Sibling Incest, Pre-Thor (2011), Post-Thor (2011), Post-Thor: The Dark World, Post-Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Post-Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 (Movie), Hela does what she wants, Loki (Marvel) Does What He Wants, Worldbuilding, The Many Deaths of Loki Odinson
Summary: Five times Hela kicked Loki out of Hel (and one time Thor had to go and fetch him).

So, this fic was originally going to be about 6k, but, uh, it ended up a fair bit longer. I fell down the worldbuilding rabbit hole, and I really enjoyed fleshing out the idea of Hel and of how Hela interacts with it. It was probably a bit too ambitious to get this size of fic done in the time, but once the idea arrived I couldn't resist.

And for smutswap , it was -

(love is) the cherry on top (8523 words) by kangeiko
Fandom: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Odo/Quark (Star Trek)
Characters: Quark (Star Trek), Odo (Star Trek)
Additional Tags: First Time, Sex Pollen, Anal Sex, Anal Fingering, Porn with Feelings
Summary: Odo is perfectly capable of investigating Quark on his own, shapeshifting abilities or no.

Those who have had to coax me through writing smut scenes in the past will know just how challenging I find them. But I find the Odo/Quark relationship irresistible, and I knew I had to give it a go.

comments

Jolene, but at the end of days

Who knew Eldritch Jolene was a thing? Well, probably many of you, but it was brand new to me, so. Someone (and by someone, I mean a large fannish roundrobin, in the best fannish tradition) has produced a new version of Jolene, where the endless description of her slowly fleshes out into an Eldritch abomination. Fandom being what it is, there are also two glorious sung versions: standard POV and victim's POV

I'm 1) in love with this beyond all reason, and 2) heartbroken that it's probably ineligible for Yuletide as it's a fan-produced work. I desperately need more! Who knew Parton and Lovecraft were so well matched??

comments

Dear Prime Time Player Letter

Dear Prime Time Player,

Thank you so much for writing for me! I'm really excited to unwrap my gift and I know what you come up will make me very happy. I've included some broad likes/DNWs in my letter below, and some prompts that I hope will be helpful. ODAO however, so if none of them strike your fancy, please do write that works for you, and I am sure to love it.

Likes:
1. Gen, slash, het, whatever. I'm fascinated by conflict and I tend to focus on the relationship that has the most conflict, the most uneven power dynamics, or the most changes in the dynamic. If you want to stick to canon and focus on gen drama, that will make me just as happy as full-on shippiness. And yes - for all the characters/relationships I've requested, I would be thrilled with shippiness, if you feel inspired.
2. Plot! I do love me some plot. Failing that, angst! Banter! Snark! Characters being their usual selves makes me happy.
3. First-times in shippy fic. I tend to be less interested in a couple after they have been happily settled or wrapped up in each other, and a lot more interested in how couples get together. If it's an established relationship, I like the conflict in the relationship - maybe something unresolved between the couple, or some bone of contention that could drive them apart.
4. Conflict. I like change in fic - change in relationships, change in preconceptions, change in situation, good old-fashion action-adventure - and having characters disagree or take opposing sides.
5. Protectiveness / family / team / squad feelings. People having each others' backs.
6. The 'enemy mine' trope - enemies forced to work together, enemies being attracted despite their history, one character forced to look after someone they hate, everything along those lines.

Do Not Wants:

1. Underage, non-con, rape. If you want to go down the dub-con route (sex pollen, intoxication, uneven power dynamics) that's perfectly fine and welcomed, but please no straight-up rape scenes or characters brutalising each other.

2. Character-bashing. If I've nominated a fandom I tend to love all the characters.

3. Character death. Canon death is fine, but please do feel free to hand-wave them back to life if you prefer.

4. The common sex-based squicks - chan as mentioned, also scat, watersports, snuff, brutality, etc. I'm also not a fan of alpha/beta/omega fic, knotting, mpreg, heavy BDSM, etc. If you are going down the shippy, smutty route, you can refer to my more detailed smutswap letter for more smutty DNWs and likes.

5. Universe-altering AUs, e.g. trans headcanons, rule 63, no powers, BDSM universe, history has been changed significantly, mundane AUs, high school settings etc etc. This is primarily because the conflict between the nominated characters is so situation and history-specific, that moving them to another setting would mean it's difficult for me to engage with them as the same characters with the same messy history. I'm perfectly OK with canon divergence AUs though (e.g. what if character X makes choice Y instead of choice Z), the closer they are to when the fic takes place, the better.

FANDOMS/REQUESTS

( Babylon 5 )

( Veronica Mars )

( Star Trek: Voyager )

( The Breakfast Club )

( Formula 1 RPF )

comments

Space Swap goodies (+ bonus vid rec!)

I have successfully survived the 1 year anniversary. It was as stressful as you would expect, but it was good that we made the trip and did everything we were supposed to. It was also incredibly tiring, and I came back ready for a holiday (and greeted by a lot of people asking "how was your break?" which never ceases to be the worst question. I answered with "it was a family commitment" which seemed enough for people to drop it).

I also managed to get both my space_swap and my smutswap assignments in on time, hallelujah. In fact, the space_swap collection is already open and there are some great works in there! My delicious gift is linked below - it was just what I needed to brighten my day! Lovely, spot-on characterisation of Lister and Rimmer, and a sweet friends to lovers transition (with some self-sacrifice as my bullet-proof kink), it was everything I ever wanted in this ship. <3 Thank you, mystery author!

Decompilation (4958 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Red Dwarf
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Dave Lister/Arnold Rimmer
Additional Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Emotionally Repressed, Friends to Lovers, Self-Sacrifice, Not Without Serious Qualms Though, This Is Rimmer After All
Summary: He had to smile. That ruined everything.

I also wanted to rec a couple of works which you should also check out:

VID: Come With Me Now (0 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Thor (Movies), Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Heimdall/Thor
Summary: "Heimdall, I know you can see me." A Thor/Heimdall fanvid.

( Embedded video behind the cut )

 And -

Access Records (1008 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Star Trek: Voyager
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Seven of Nine & Naomi Wildman, Kathryn Janeway & Naomi Wildman, B'Elanna Torres & Naomi Wildman
Characters: Naomi Wildman, Seven of Nine, Kathryn Janeway, B'Elanna Torres
Additional Tags: Holodecks/Holosuites, Worldbuilding, Friendship, Female Friendship, Mentors
Summary: Holodeck Access Records (Weekly History) - Wildman, Naomi

Both of which are fantastic!

Also, not part of the swap but still a rec I wanted to share, is this wonderful vid for the Ladies of Marvel:

In other fandom news, I signed up for the wipbigbang with my endless MCU Stony WIP. What does this mean? Well, the good news is, it'll be finished by the deadline, which is great. The bad news is that I can't post anything until the deadline has passed, so there will be a bit of a moratorium on updates until the end of July. However, it should hopefully be accompanied by some lovely fan art, so definitely looking forward to that. Given my sporadic updates over the last few months, I doubt anyone will notice, honestly. (I was aiming to finish it by Endgame, laughsobno. We're going to see Endgame on Sat 27th so I will be buried under a rock Thurs-Sat to avoid spoilers, and will likely then come home and sob and write.)

Finally, I had a bit of an AO3 kudos milestone hit during the last couple of weeks, and it made me realize just how long I've been on AO3. It'll be 10 years this winter. I should do something for that, but I'm at a bit of a loss. Any suggestions?

comments

Dear hurt/comfort exchange writer!

Hello dear writer! H/C is my absolute favourite, and I will frequently seek it out in all its overblown, high octane angsty glory. So just by writing some H/C you have already made me happy! I have thoughts and suggestions about the various fandoms below the cut, but I want to start off by saying that 1) I will happily re-read my favourite characters being hurt and then comforted in practically any situation, so you are guaranteed a happy reader, and 2) did I mention that just featuring h/c makes me happy? Write what works for you and I am certain to adore it!

comments

Wayback Exchange Letter

Hello dear Wayback exchange author! I am very excited about this fest because so many of my favourite shows qualify, and it has been a nostalgia trip for me to even go through nominations. So rest assured, any fic in these dead (or merely resting!) fandoms would be welcome and you are guaranteed to make me happy. Some thoughts/ideas are below, and you can also get a sense of the stuff I like/am excited about by having a look at my sign-ups for previous fests (tagged by the fest name). I've included some broad category likes/DNWs below the cut.

That's a lot of characters and fandoms and prompts! You can tell that I love all of these fandoms so much. Honestly, please write what you feel works best for you/the characters, and I am sure that I will love it!

comments

A veritable cornucopia of fic fests

I have spent the last couple of weeks either writing fic for ficathons, or signing up for ficathons. I know exactly why I'm doing it - April looms ever larger and frankly I'm going to keep myself busy with whatever works at this stage - but I need to pace myself and make sure it's a positive distraction rather than having a meltdown later on. I'm signed up for space_swap and smutswap and will also be doing the waybackexchange . The others on the horizon are ssrconfidential and hurtcomfortex . Probably others? I know this means I'm not writing as much for 'till human voices wake us' but I am thinking about it and letting it percolate. I still want to finish it soon. Maybe not before Endgame - there's a bit too much to go of the fic for that - but soon. I feel like this is the trickiest part of the fic, where I'm closing out one section and moving it into the next section, and I need to make sure I'm absolutely certain of where it's going before I commit to it. It's good practice I suppose, but it is tricky to manage.

( Work and RL )

I haven't seen Umbrella Academy yet.
Dear Spacer Letter

Dear SpaceSwap Creator!

Thank you so much for writing for me! I am sure that I will be thrilled by whatever you write, and I cannot wait to unwrap it. I've included a copy of my sign-up below, as well as some further thoughts and prompts that I hope will be helpful. My overall position though is to please write what you feel comfortable with - I would much rather receive something that you enjoyed creating! So if you're looking at a ship I've requested and are thinking "good god WHY" then good news - I love gen just as much as shippiness! And I love canon a WHOLE lot. So I will always be happy with missing scenes, intense confrontations, emotionally fraught yet still unspoken encounters, family!fic, enemies forced to work together, h/c and a dozen other tropes that wouldn't be out of place on our screens.

( More details below the cut )

Thank you so much for writing for me! I can't wait to read my gift!

comments

Fic rec! Bester/Garibaldi YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT

Guys. GUYS. I got my chocolateboxcomm fic and SOMEONE WROTE ME S5 BESTER/GARIBALDI!!!!!!!!!

Excuse me while I hyperventilate because this has made me SO happy! Mystery author, whoever you are, ILU. I have wanted this since I saw S5, oooooh, TWENTY YEARS AGO. AND AND AND AND not only is it S5 Bester/Garibaldi, it's done so gloriously well????? Like, ok yes we know that it's an ulta non-canon hate!ship HOWEVER if someone were given the task of MAKING IT canon I could totally see them going down this route and Garibaldi's reaction is particularly spot-on. He notices so much, and there is this brief moment of absolute terror when Bester is in his mind and that will now forever be a nightmare for Michael and even if it happens for the most benevolent of reasons it will still terrify him. And we have a flustered Bester who is SO not happy with how this is going and this was NOT THE PLAN GODDAMIT and Garibaldi - once he figures things out - is just so full of schadenfreude and pure delight in Bester's misery and I WANT A MILLION SEQUELS WHERE GARIBALDI EXPLOITS THIS NEW KNOWLEDGE TO THE FULL OH MY GOD. asdjgkJAS;akll;ekwjdhlKJS I AM SO HAPPY!

Run and read hoist with his own petard and give this fabulous fic some love!

I will do a proper rec post for chocobox a bit later on but I couldn't wait until then to shout about how happy I am!

comments

Vid Recs, AO3 Open Doors and Smut Swap

I made this big deal out of sorting out my previous year's registration docs for WorldCon so I could nominate for this year's Hugo Awards, and... I'm a bit lost. This will be the first year I'm nominating, and it's quickly dawning on me that my reading is hopelessly behind and I haven't actually read enough to be able to nominate anything. Maybe for Hugos three or four years in the past, sure. (They should build a time-delay just for me.) I know the easy solution for this is to read recently-released things, but I'd managed to put things in some sort of reading order in a vague attempt to whittle down my TBR pile, and... ok, look, I admit it, I was too ambitious.

I'm still considering going to WorldCon, with a sort of vague longing. I don't think I could manage to go on my own (general stress and anxiety will pretty much put a stop to that), but I don't know anyone else making the journey, so... idk.

I wanted to share a few vids I'm really fond of that were recently uploaded on AO3 (and therefore easily bookmarkable). They're both by laurashapiro and I've loved them for a long time.

First up -

Transparent (2 words) by Laura Shapiro
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Tara Maclay/Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris/Willow Rosenberg, Daniel "Oz" Osbourne/Willow Rosenberg
Characters: Willow Rosenberg
Additional Tags: Angst, Animal Death, Animal Harm, vid, Video, Embedded Video, Fanvids
Summary: A Willow character study (through early Season 6)

Why I love it: Willow is one of my favourite Buffy characters. I know I say this about (almost) all the Buffy characters, but early anxious stressed Willow was someone I desperately wanted life to be kind to. She was genuinely quirky and funny, and Alyson Hannigan was SO good at making me empathise with her that I can't watch her cry without crying myself. Watching Willow hurt hurts me as well. This vid is basically an entire song's worth of Willow's anxiety and stress and hurt, so... it hurts, but in an incredibly good way.

Beatitudes (2 words) by Laura Shapiro
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Buffy Summers, Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, Rupert Giles, Anya Jenkins, Cordelia Chase, Angel (BtVS), Spike (BtVS), Riley Finn
Additional Tags: Ensemble Cast, Video, vid, Embedded Video, Fanvids, Vividcon
Summary: A requiem

Why I love it: Having said that Willow is my favourite... everyone else is also my favourite. Beatitudes had such a profound effect on me. I love the careful layering of the characters, the build of the crescendo, the triumph promised and won. (And there is a bit where the song goes "they can see god" and it's paired with this breathless revelation and that image and bit of song stuck with me from pretty much the first time I saw it, years ago.)

Actually, while I'm recc'ing Laura Shapiro's vids, let me add one more:

Circles (2 words) by Laura Shapiro
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The West Wing
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Abbey Bartlet, Jed Bartlet, Leo McGarry, Toby Ziegler
Additional Tags: Episode: s02e18 17 People, Vividcon, vid, Fanvids, Video, Embedded Video
Summary: The White House is no place for secrets.

Why I love it: LOOK AT IT. The pacing is perfect, the way the beats of the music exactly match the dramatic beats. This is one of my favourite parts of TWW canon, and the reveal is gorgeously done.

Also, I am very excited about the Open Doors imports that took place in 2018. If you haven't seen the list of imported archives yet, it includes such behemoths as the MTAC archive (the giant archive of NCIS fic) and the Spooky Awards (covering X-Files fic). I have spent SO many hours at both sites and I am really happy that they are now available at AO3 and the fics have been preserved. (I've had more than one moment of panic when attempted to access MTAC and finding the links broken or the site unavailable, so I'll be going through and carefully re-bookmarking everything.) There are a lot of fandoms covered - including The Sentinel, Firefly, Buffy, RPF, etc - and multi-fandom archives, so do have a look and update your bookmarks of your favourite works.

I'm also considering doing Smut Swap, and putting my nominations together was... interesting. Because I had the pairings, and then I had the kinks, and then... they wouldn't match. I could perfectly well imagine those kinks with other fandoms, but the fandoms I actually wanted to request? Nope. Anyway, I've put through what I've put through, but the kink noms are still really open for me because I only put a couple on there and I need to have a serious think about what I actually want to REQUEST, not look at the two lists separately.

And then I thought, "oh, and what I'm comfortable writing" and I blushed so hard I could feel it. I mean, I've written smut before. (Let's face it, I've written some absolutely filth, I'm OK with that.) But somehow this is turning me into a Victorian maiden. Idk what that's about. I will have to think hard about what to do re: this exchange. I do want to participate, but I suspect if I'm literally blushing over writing some mild kink, that's probably... not good. (I reiterate - I have written absolute filth in my time, I have no idea where this faux!shyness is coming from.)

comments

Spider....pig?

I went to see Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse yesterday, and it was great.

( Trailer for the 2 people in the universe who have missed it )

( Spoilery thoughts )

On the other hand, and wanting to balance the sweetness with some acidity, I've been reading Blake's 7 fic and getting too far down that rabbit hole. I can't watch/read too much Blake's 7 because it's so fucking depressing and it triggers me into nightmares and depressive episodes really easily, which is why I tend to confine myself either to S1-2 eps or to HEX fics, but somehow I overrode my own better instincts and read a bunch of Avon/Vila PGP fics which... I mean, shoot me now, it'll be kinder. I've never been so depressed in my entire life. (If it's PGP fics, only ever read HEX B/A PGP fics ordinarily, bc PGP must have HEX or I will... well, be very depressed. And I have yet to see a A/V HEX PGP fic, so...)

And I'm trying to finish my chocolate box fic. I say trying, and finish, because I am draft 7 and yet somehow it's still refusing to be written. I know the minimum word-count is a ridiculously low 300 words, but the prompt I chose can't be done neatly or succinctly so it has to be done messily and long-windedly, and so, well, I'm on draft 7 and it's still an unholy mess. Help.

comments

Studio 60 re-watch

I recently blitz re-watched Studio 60 and wow, do I have some conflicting feelings about it. On balance, I like it enough to re-watch it and to keep the DVD box-set. This can be contrasted with me failing to finish The Newsroom and having zero interest in giving it another go. (But then also with my love for The West Wing.) Sorkin is definitely a problematic fave, I'll admit, and a lot of his flaws are front and centre in Studio 60. Female characters inexplicably young for their role and clumsy as new-born colts? Check. Obsession with the Christian right to the exclusion of all else? Check. Male characters simultaneously smug and in power, check. But where we have genuine power-players in The West Wing, the power in Studio 60 is weirdly transitory. Everyone is revolving through the door of being hired and fired, on the air and potentially canned. Somehow, Jordan McDeere's personal history is front page news (is this a thing in the US, bc it's weird in the UK) and the romance with Danny is played for, well, romance, rather than stalking. Just... that whole thing didn't work for me, Jordan, Danny, any of it. I'd be OK while they were on the screen, and then the moment the camera wasn't on then I'd be revolted. I think it was a case of Bradley Whitford and Amanda Peet's charms tipping the scales while they were in my line of sight, and then the reality of the writing re-asserting itself the moment we cut away. Sorry, guys, that plotline didn't work for me at all.

What else.... spare from Matt and Harriett. Has there ever been another couple so toxic for one another? I'm one of those weird people who thinks if you don't respect the person you're with there are probably no wedding bells in your future. And while they may respect each other's talents, they don't respect each other in the least. I had no patience with it.

So what did I like? I really, really liked Jack Rudolph. I liked him on my first watch, and I adored him on my rewatch. While the nonsense storylines were happening, Steven Weber was acting his socks off and giving us a rounded character in Jack Rudolph and I could quite happily watch an entire show just about him. I could even stomach Jordan/Danny (if it had /Jack in the mix in there). I want to write fic about him - maybe something happens and the media is out for his blood and Danny and Matt for once try to watch out for him, because how about seeing him as a person you self-centred, sanctimonious - aherm, sorry. Or maybe the fact that Jack is constantly drunk, that he's a fighty yet considerate drunk, that he's sad he's getting divorced, that he's under pressure and he offers himself as the sacrificial lamb to protect the network - maybe we could have some time to flesh that out. I'd quite happily write a million words of gen fic (and/or shippy fic) for Jack is my point.

Tom and Simon! I love them. Mostly in connection with Jack, it has to be said, but also in relation to each other and to a lesser extent to Harriett (primarily because we don't see them with Harriett that much, weirdly). Tom's brother and that storyline was weirdly paced and endless, but I would have liked to see the fallout of that. What does Tom do after? How do Simon and Jack relate to each other after that?

I liked Cal, I liked the guest stars, I liked the premise. I guess I just didn't like the romance element which felt very forced and I would have preferred if we'd had 3/4 seasons before Danny/Jordan got together, and absolutely no will they/won't they on Matt/Harriett - just have them be exes! People do that!

Also, Jack. The show needed more Jack.

comments

Icon meme

1. Comment to this entry saying 'Ooo Shiney!' and I will pick 3 of your icons/userpics.
2. Make an entry in your own journal (or just reply if you prefer) and talk about the icons I picked!

So, teigh_corvus selected the following:

1) This is a relatively new icon. When I came back to DW I discovered that I didn't actually have that many MCU icons, and none uploaded, so I figured I should remedy that given that I'm writing a lot of MCU (and Tony) fic at the moment. I like the way the icon was been composed (you'll notice a lot of interesting crops in the icons) and the colour choice, and this is one of my favourite Tony scenes, so of course it was a natural choice for me.

2) I've had this icon for years, and I suspect I carried it over from LJ. It's the first line of "I Capture the Castle" and my key words for it are "literary indulgence" which I think tells you a lot!

3) Ah, Sydney. I've had this icon since I first started watching and writing for Alias, so it's definitely old enough to go to school and possibly it's even in high school at this point. I love the cropping on this, and the gorgeous colours.

comments

More Joy fics - part 2, Nancy Drew trailer & B5 vid rec

A couple more fics to round these off:

Lost Lilies Out of Mind - Gone with the Wind, Ella Lorena Kennedy for tabaqui

totus mundus agit histrionem (but at least there's an interval) - Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley for teigh_corvus

Part 1 of these is here.

Unrelated, the new Nancy Drew trailer is out, and I'm actually pretty excited about it! Yes, it's cheesy and very tongue in cheek, but it looks like fun.

The other thing I want to share is a rec for a Babylon 5 music video. It's incredibly spoilery (covering S2-4) so I've stuck it behind the cut:

comments
