Fuck it, drama post time

First off, VShojo stealing a half mill from charity. Ironmouse, a VTuber (Person who streams using an avatar instead of their face) who spent the first 7 years of her career streaming while laying in bed due to her chronic illness, did a fundraiser for the Immune Deficiency Foundation. Over the years, she's raised four million for the group that helps people like her. But, her agency isn't releasing the funds for the most recent one, and also owes some, if not all, of their talent large amounts of their salary.

Ironmouse started streaming because she was lonely. She has to be physically isolated due to immune system problems. VTubing is a space where you've got a lot of people with earning potential in the millions, but a lot of the talent is chronically ill, have severe anxiety disorders or are highly closeted trans people. One reason to use a face rig is living in an area where you have to be very gender conforming for physical safety reasons, and it's an outlet, a space for relief and community. This is a billion dollar industry, where a large chunk of the people are highly vulnerable. Agencies provide the separation between working with sponsors and other companies they need to safety. They can't just be giving out their bank info and can't manage to make their own corporate entity or shell company on their own. They need someone to provide privacy and also be vetting all the sponsorship offers.

The good news is that fans came together to raise, so far, over $857,000.00 to cover the missing half mil and then some. Since Conner, who was also involved in the charity streams, recently had to call them and say 'sorry, the promised funds aren't coming' I can't image what it's like to have people having their backs like this.

Hopefully, VShojo didn't lose the money on a failed start up or something and lawyers can whack them open like pinata to recover the money. It's amazing to see the support, but also fucked that people have to. And also, while big streamers have opened up about being owed 'Ferrari levels of money' we don't know if smaller streamers who have also been ripped off for money they can't lose.

Also, while it's not confirmed, very solid sources have said that VShojo employees were leaking appearances and relationship statuses of their employees. From the sounds of it, it was being done as a flex, being all 'I know what they really look like, who has a partner they don't talk about and who is actually single'

I want to post about two other things going on, but I'll do separate posts. While not everyone in the Vtubing space is disabled or has something else major going on, there is just such a intense intersection of highly vulnerable people, shit tons of money, and also people who can't just go get other jobs. And finally, a number of VTubers have said in very strong terms, that there is even more to this VShojo situation, but they can't talk about it for legal reasons. Legal proceedings are already underway. There's another shoe going to drop here.

Star-Lord (Marvel Preview 4)

I had a yen to go through Starlord's backstory and apparently it's even more of a mish-mash than most comic book characters, with retcons having consigned his original origin story to an alternate reality. Still, I find Marvel Preview 4 an interesting taste of seventies sci-fi, with its zeerust futurism, hints of astrology, In Search Of The Unknown UFOism and NASA worship coupled with the usual capes and lasers.

(Yes, there are capes. It's the future, jabroni.)

This is SF coming out of the same primordial soup as Star Wars (which would premiere two years later) and it's just fascinating to me how it's simultaneously so modern and yet so of-another-time.

On Wednesday, even!

Almost finished: Ombria in Shadow, Patricia McKillip: This is one of my favorite McKillips and one I reread frequently. I feel like the worldbuilding is more distinctive than some of her other works from this period, maybe because it's set in a decaying city which is vividly sketched in. It also feels a lot more dangerous and high-stakes than some of her later work, at least to me, and I love Mag and Lydea and Faey. I still do not entrely understand what is going on at the end but that certainly is typical of this phase of McKillip's writing.

Midway: Cato the Younger, Fred K. Drogula. I forgot that I owned a copy of this so I was particularly delighted to find it on the shelf. I think it's very good; Drogula does a fine job of maintaining his impartiality while making it perfectly clear what kind of person Cato was, and how much responsiblity he bears for the collapse of the Roman Republic through sheer bloody-minded assholeishness. But he also isn't presenting Cato as a simplistic, moralistic figure: he was also very good at navigating and directing Roman politics in his lifetime, and Drogula also does a good job explaining why the system was perhaps particularly vulnerable to manipulation by men like Cato (or Caesar, his nemesis.)

2025 Reading Log | 50/200 yearly goal (+9 from last update)

I drafted this last week and then forgot to post it! So, rapid-fire book thoughts:

First up is the Tarot Sequence books 1-3 by K.D. Edwards (titles: The Last Sun, The Hanged Man, The Hourglass Throne) which is a queer paranormal/fantasy series with romance and a bit of mystery. I really enjoyed these books, as they all have a sort of found family quality to them that I love. The main plot is basically the MC gaining personal power back after a traumatic event as a teen (murder/SA), with magical shenanigans. The author is currently writing the next few books and I look forward to picking them up once they get released.

Then I read two books in the Tithenai Chronicles by Foz Meadows (titles: A Strange and Stubborn Endurance and All the Hidden Paths), a queer fantasy romance which I LOVED! A whole lot! The first book is about an arranged marriage between two people from different cultures, so there’s fun cultural stuff to get through. Also political intrigue!

The second book (with the same people) has more political intrigue and also murder attempts, and while I enjoyed it as well I did think the personal developments sort of backslid from the first book just a bit. Also tbh I didn’t like side characters with the intense BDSM relationship. But overall I liked this series and I’m definitely going to be moving the other FM books up on my reading list.

Another banger: Yield Under Great Persuasion by Alexandra Rowland. Oh my GOD I loved this book! Another queer fantasy romance, because it’s my fav genre, with an interesting fantasy setting. But the focus is on the characters and not necessarily the magic/setting.

Several scenes made me laugh so hard I had to take a break to recover. I really liked how the MC and his love interest were stupid in different ways, and how they worked through their problems together (sometimes by just screaming at each other).

Then I have a few books I read on long bus rides between cities (I’m in Ann Arbor now, btw!). I read Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott on the bus between St. Paul and Milwaukee. It’s a sort of how-to writing book but I was more interested in the memoir bits.

Lamott is a funny writer without going over-the-top, and I enjoyed this book enough that I’m interested in reading her other memoirs. I’d gotten this book from a Little Free Library so I dropped it off at a hostel bookshelf to pass it on to another reader.

Then on the bus between Chicago and Ann Arbor I finished A girls’ guide to India by Louise Wates, a fun book that’s a mix of practical (and detailed) advice about traveling in India and travel memoir. I have a slightly older version so it may be a bit outdated by now, but I still really enjoyed it and I’m sure many of the tips will be useful when I visit India myself.

I paid slightly too much for this at a used bookstore in Milwaukee so I’m keeping it for my collection and will be dropping it off at storage when I visit it in the fall.

Oh, and I also read The Miracle of Morning Pages by Julia Cameron which is a sort of supplement to the Artist’s Way, which I’m trying (and already failing) to do. It’s basically a Q&A about her morning pages idea and it’s a little hilarious because in the main book she says there’s no rules, and then in this book she makes a bunch of rules. *shrug emoji*

The Sunnydale Herald Newsletter, Tuesday, July 22nd

Buffy walks into her dorm room. She starts to undo the straps on the back of her shirt to take it off as she heads towards her bed.
GILES: Uh, good morning.
Buffy turns around in shock. She sees Giles and Willow behind him at work at Willow's computer. She starts to redo her top.
BUFFY: Giles! I didn't know you were here.
GILES: Oh really?
Willow asks Buffy encouragingly - without speaking out loud: Everything OK with Parker?
BUFFY: I, uh, studying. At the library. (Giles gives her a disbelieving look.) All Saturday night... Uh, you know what. I'm an adult now and it's none of your business where I was.

that's 21 straight successful stolen bases

Today was my first day back at work after my vacation and I did not sleep at all well last night, despite, you know, working from home and didn't have to get up early or anything. I was tossing and turning until sometime after 4 am, at which point I finally fell asleep.

Work was fine - busy, and kind of a lot, but not difficult despite the lack of sleep - but then I sat down on the couch after dinner to watch the Mets and fell asleep for about 40 minutes. *hands*

I'm really glad I took yesterday off too. I 100% recommend adding an extra day onto your vacation if you can - especially if it's a Monday, and doubly so if you actually went away. It makes it easier to get back into the grind, at least for me. I had 333 emails to sort through this morning, and there is way too much going on, as usual, but I timed it so that all of my regular meetings happened while I was out, so this week should be fairly quiet.

On the home front, I've had my new dishwasher for a week now and it is working really well, though I am still learning how to load it. The tines are much closer together and shorter than in my old one, which makes it difficult to get stuff in between them. But it's so quiet! And it doesn't leak! *knock wood* It does take 2.5 hours to run the full normal cycle, but I can live with that.

On the TV front, I finished Murderbot and enjoyed it - Mensah is still my favorite and I wish Bharadwaj had had more to do because I liked her as well.

I also finished the last 2 available episodes of My Life Is Murder because I read they are doing a new season, though who knows when it will be available here. I enjoyed the s4 2-part finale, and I do kind of low-key ship Alexa and Madison, though I also like that they have not had any real romantic interests for Alexa, and those 2 episodes really focused on her lingering grief for her husband.

In other news, Baby Miss L went to Sesame Place this past weekend and the videos of her vibrating with joy over meeting Elmo and Grover and Cookie Monster are amazing!

52 episodes of Micronauts just dropped!

Back around 2019, Hasbro was working to develop a Micronauts animated series. A whole 52 episodes were produced, but the animation studio, Boulder Media, was sold off and the show was shelved and made a tax write-off.

Well, guess what just leaked to archive.org!

Once more with public transit...

Choosing to change my bus route slightly to avoid assholes who won't take "no" for an answer was definitely the right choice. I hadn't realized just how stressful it had been getting until today when I avoided the transit center, and the difference was very much noticeable.

The extra walk once I get off bus #1 to get to a bus stop where I can get on bus #2 is a bit annoying, admittedly, but I think it's well worth it. It was so much more peaceful waiting for the bus at a random bus stop with one or two other people than it is waiting at the transit center with dozens and dozens of strangers all around.

Now, it's not going to be fun the next time I take the bus when it's raining, since the bus stops don't have any type of roof over them like the transit center. Considering the alternative, though, I think it may still be worth it.
