Spider....pig?

I went to see Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse yesterday, and it was great.

So, first of all, the music was great. Normally music doesn't jump out at me unless it's particularly terrible, so it was really notable how much I liked it. It really gave me a sense of Miles as a teenager with a distinct music taste. I haven't read any Miles Morales so this was all new to me, and I don't know how much was already there in the comics and how much was created for the films, but all the little touches - Miles's artistic inclinations, his academic excellence, his music taste - was really helpful in getting a sense of him as a person. The one thing that was missing for me was an understanding of who was in his life. I mean, his parents, check. His uncle, check. And... that was it. I got the impression that he'd only just started at this new school and that he hadn't made any friends yet. Which did strike me as a bit odd, because Miles is frankly great. He's smart and silly and artistic and geeky yet a bit cool. Why doesn't he have friends?? Even if they're not from his new school? That was a bit odd.

His uncle was an interesting choice, both in terms of the guidance that he gives Miles and also with him - spoiler - being a bad guy. Which I totally called about 10 mins before it actually happened, because of course something bad had to happen to Miles. (And no, having a stranger die in front of him doesn't cut the mustard.)

The plot itself was pretty fun, although obviously once the uncle was dead the stakes were pretty low. (Of course Miles survives, and of course they can't kill two members of his family one after the other.) But Kingpin was suitably horrible as the baddie, so that worked. (And his plan was both evil and vaguely pathetic, which was great.) I liked the other spider people, and Gwen was absolutely great. As was the weird spider....pig? And Nicholas Cage with a rubik's cube. (Unexpected Lily Tomlin was also awesome.)

I thought this was really great as a film - the plot and characters were great, the design of it was outstanding, and I saw it at the IMAX in 3D so it was really spectacular to watch. Very funny throughout, as well, with plenty of subtle humour as well as slapstick. Really well done.

On the other hand, and wanting to balance the sweetness with some acidity, I've been reading Blake's 7 fic and getting too far down that rabbit hole. I can't watch/read too much Blake's 7 because it's so fucking depressing and it triggers me into nightmares and depressive episodes really easily, which is why I tend to confine myself either to S1-2 eps or to HEX fics, but somehow I overrode my own better instincts and read a bunch of Avon/Vila PGP fics which... I mean, shoot me now, it'll be kinder. I've never been so depressed in my entire life. (If it's PGP fics, only ever read HEX B/A PGP fics ordinarily, bc PGP must have HEX or I will... well, be very depressed. And I have yet to see a A/V HEX PGP fic, so...)

And I'm trying to finish my chocolate box fic. I say trying, and finish, because I am draft 7 and yet somehow it's still refusing to be written. I know the minimum word-count is a ridiculously low 300 words, but the prompt I chose can't be done neatly or succinctly so it has to be done messily and long-windedly, and so, well, I'm on draft 7 and it's still an unholy mess. Help.

Ooh, I bet Into the Spider-verse was amazing on IMAX! I'd almost be willing to try 3D for it and usually I can't stand films in 3D, they give me headaches. But I bet the visuals in that would have been spectacular. It's such a great film.

I'm sorry Blakes 7 has that effect on you. There are some canons though...

Good luck with draft 7! I'm struggling with my own Chocolate Box story and yet I know this canon really well.

I SO VERY INTO Blake's 7 for so many years, but now I hardly ever think of it. So weird.
