Did anyone recently write some meta they intended as a gift for someone in the B5 fandom? Because I've received some here, but I'm fairly sure it was mis-linked and it was intended for someone else. I don't recognize the creator, either. (It's meta about the Earth-Minbari war with some elements from the script books I think?)
Edit: mystery solved!

Fic rec! Bester/Garibaldi YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT

Guys. GUYS. I got my [community profile] chocolateboxcomm  fic and SOMEONE WROTE ME S5 BESTER/GARIBALDI!!!!!!!!!

Excuse me while I hyperventilate because this has made me SO happy! Mystery author, whoever you are, ILU. I have wanted this since I saw S5, oooooh, TWENTY YEARS AGO. AND AND AND AND not only is it S5 Bester/Garibaldi, it's done so gloriously well????? Like, ok yes we know that it's an ulta non-canon hate!ship HOWEVER if someone were given the task of MAKING IT canon I could totally see them going down this route and Garibaldi's reaction is particularly spot-on. He notices so much, and there is this brief moment of absolute terror when Bester is in his mind and that will now forever be a nightmare for Michael and even if it happens for the most benevolent of reasons it will still terrify him. And we have a flustered Bester who is SO not happy with how this is going and this was NOT THE PLAN GODDAMIT and Garibaldi - once he figures things out - is just so full of schadenfreude and pure delight in Bester's misery and I WANT A MILLION SEQUELS WHERE GARIBALDI EXPLOITS THIS NEW KNOWLEDGE TO THE FULL OH MY GOD. asdjgkJAS;akll;ekwjdhlKJS I AM SO HAPPY!

Run and read hoist with his own petard and give this fabulous fic some love!

I will do a proper rec post for chocobox a bit later on but I couldn't wait until then to shout about how happy I am!

More Joy fics - part 2, Nancy Drew trailer & B5 vid rec

A couple more fics to round these off:

Lost Lilies Out of Mind - Gone with the Wind, Ella Lorena Kennedy for [personal profile] tabaqui

totus mundus agit histrionem (but at least there's an interval) - Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley for [personal profile] teigh_corvus

Part 1 of these is here.

Unrelated, the new Nancy Drew trailer is out, and I'm actually pretty excited about it! Yes, it's cheesy and very tongue in cheek, but it looks like fun.

The other thing I want to share is a rec for a Babylon 5 music video. It's incredibly spoilery (covering S2-4) so I've stuck it behind the cut:

Snowflake Challenge: Day 5

Day 5

In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Mark Watches - A million years late to the party, I discovered Mark Oshiro's reviews and reaction videos. I'm a recent convert to reaction videos, so maybe it's just the lure of the new that's drawing me in, but I'm really enjoying Mark watching Babylon 5. I've powered through a few other shows he's also watched in the meantime - Veronica Mars, some West Wing, some Star Trek - and for the most part I've found a surprising amount of joy in just sharing his enjoyment of the shows. He goes in cold - no spoilers at all - and he watches each episode before writing about it. There is possibly nothing I like better than watching an unspoiled newbie watching Babylon 5. He has laughed. He has cried. He has yelled at the screen a LOT. His most frequent reaction is "WTF???" which, if you've seen the show, is 110% accurate and appropriate. He's currently watching Season 4. The comments section of his blog is split into spoilery and unspoilery sections. Unspoilery are open text, and spoilery are behind rot13 coding to allow people to discuss things in-thread without spoiling new watchers. I am really enjoying all the strong emotion Mark has when watching a show I love so much, especially in the current context. If you like B5 or are thinking about watching it sometime soon, I strongly urge you to give the site a go and join us in watching.

On the same topic, we have The Audio Guide to Babylon 5. I've linked the Twitter feed because the website seems to be down at the moment. This podcast (available via all podcast apps) was great. It had three people who really knew the show well - Chip and Shannon Sudderth, and Erika Ensign (one of my favourite podcasters) - as well as a guest 'newbie' in the form of Steven Schapansky, Erika's husband. (Steven was the control group.) The three podcasters watched each episode and discussed it at length (episodes ranged from 1hr - almost 2hrs), including behind the scenes information even I (an obsessive fan) hadn't known about. The podcast finished S5 fairly recently and is on a well-earned break, but all episodes are available to download and listen to. If you're interested in how something was made - how it was crafted, what the creator has said about it, how things were received by the fledgling fandom spaces at the time - then this is a great podcast with experienced and knowledgeable hosts.

One of the nicest and most close-knit communities out there is the [community profile] chmslash community (formerly known as tgslash in some circles). Top Gear/Grand Tour as a fandom hasn't been without its share of dramas, and what I find amazing is that the community has mostly taken that on the chin and soldiered on. There are regular challenges (including the recent Secret Santa) and the members are so incredibly supportive and kind.

One final (small) plug - some enterprising souls have gathered together to run a Culture fest in the not-too-distant future. If you're a fan of the Culture books and would like to get involved in reading/writing Culture fic, you can find the comm here

Babylon 5: my favourite episodes (part 1 of 5)

Rather belatedly, I noticed that [personal profile] selenak did an excellent job of eviscerating Den of Geek's terrible list of best Babylon 5 episodes.

So I've decided I'm going to make my own list, with much better criteria. (No Technomages allowed. Shoo.)

I'll start with Season 1.

Signs and Portents

I introduced a couple of friends to Babylon 5 recently, and I have been watching the show alongside them. I didn't realise that this was fairly wide-spread; evidently, the 20th anniversary has brought about a resurgence of interest!

We've covered Season 2, and are in the middle of S3 thus far. Some thoughts, with the benefit of hindsight:

1) I used to draw hearts around Delenn and Sheridan, then went through a phase of having absolutely no interest in them. I've come back around to being very interested in them again, primarily because of the utter respect on both their parts for the other. They are very different, and yet they respect those differences and try to accommodate them. I don't know whether it is a case of television moving towards bombastic, dramatic relationships and away from quiet build-ups, or whether this was always somewhat rare to see, but it strikes me as something I no longer see on screen. Even on shows where there is ostensibly a slow-build, it feels more like a will-they/won't-they dynamic, rather than a gradual growing together. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I do like it.

2) I'm more and more convinced that there was an intention to do something with Talia's arc rather than just leave it hanging. Did we ever see this resolved in a novel? I know that Bester references her later on in Dust to Dust but I feel that his comment is more designed to provoke.

3) I really, really appreciate the creation of the different races. Yes, we have the main players, but we also get to see the other races fleshed out until you can spot them. OK, maybe I never learned the name of the fishpeople, but I remember Ambassador FishPerson being concerned with Homeguard terrorism. I can spot the unfortunate Markab, the garrulous Drazi, the curiously identical-looking Brakiri. (I think it's established that the Drazi don't have any females - or that they reproduce in a non-binary way, anyway - but is it ever explained about the Brakiri? Or have I selectively not noticed any female Brakiri?) And the Hyach (Hyatt? No, that's a hotel chain) and the Pak'Ma'Ra and so forth. Even if they are not one of the main races, from very early on they have a coherent look which helps the station to feel real.

4) I've discovered the Babylon 5 audio guide podcasts and they are excellent! Great discussion for each episode, and suitable for both new viewers and those doing a re-watch. (They have a loud noise to indicate the start of spoilers.)

5) You can now find a whole bunch of convention videos online! The 20th anniversary con panels are mostly on YouTube (here, here, here and here... and here, here) but here are also some 1990s clips. I haven't watched them so I can't swear as to the quality, but it's nice to see them!

6) I feel like more than a couple of governments have watched this show and thought, "yes, the Earth Alliance approach to things is actually pretty great, we should totally implement that at home." Some of it is even worse. I'm fairly certain that Donald Trump's speeches map word for word against Londo's most bombastic, aggressive declarations. He is, after all, going to make the Centauri Republic great again.

7) Julie Musante would have been hired by David Cameron's team in seconds.

8) I really like how we see representatives of the Earth Alliance and they're not all American? There are people from all across the Alliance.

9) ... I miss Andreas.

Some things, in sequence

I feel like I'm cheating on LJ with DW, and on DW with twitter. I'm such a harlot, I just can't help myself. Anyway, that's why I haven't posted for a while. Also, it's easier to check twitter on my phone & tweet quickly, than it is to do DW posts. Although I have set it up to be able to do phone/email posts, so I don't know why I'm complaining.

I was pretty upset when I heard that Michael O'Hare died. Mira wrote beautifully on his death here (link courtesy of [personal profile] selenak ). Michael O'Hare was the first 'real' actor I met, when I was very young and at my first convention and hopelessly lost. He gave me a hug & Ruth helped me find where I was meant to be. I met the others then, too, and it was the S4/5 hiatus and the day when Claudia didn't sign her contract, and Ed was on stage telling people about how he nearly fell in a canal in Venice, and then Peter & Andreas (fresh from signing autographs, which Andreas had enlivened by signing alternatively as Madonna and as Gandhi) were on stage,  acting out a mock script with a slash subplot, and a guy next to me heckled them as they kissed. Andreas nearly squashed me as he ran down, grabbed the guy & kissed him, while Rick filmed the entire thing.

And. And. I read the above again, and realise just how many of these wonderful people are no longer with us. I loved Babylon 5 rather fiercely as a child, and I suppose I still do. I was always very fond the people who made it, because I always felt that they made it with love. Mira says it best, of course. I feel like I am losing a little part of my childhood.

*

Other things. I've found a flat. This is good news, as I have been at my parents' house for a ridiculous period of time, and it is doing mymental health no favours. I have taken up Pilates in the vain hope that it may help me hang on to sanity. I move in a month, and I am counting down.

Work continues ridiculously busy. I am tired & need a holiday, but see above re: sanity, lack thereof. I need to move, then go on leave.

*

Yuletide. This has the potential to make me happy, or incredibly stressed. I am hoping for the former.

*

Health. I'd like some. This chest thing can bugger off, I don't have the time.

Day 04 - Your favorite show ever

Day 04 - Your favorite show ever

Oh, this is the hardest thing EVER. And yet it totally isn't, not really. There is my first show - the show that taught me English when I didn't speak it, and imprinted on my young brain: Star Trek: The Original Series. There is the instant connection with Buffy and The West Wing and Alias... All of that pales in comparison to the deep, unconditional love I have for Babylon 5. I started watching it in season 3, and bought the videos to catch up. They were my first big purchase, and they used up all my pocket money for months. I remember staying up to watch Endgame, way past when I should have been in bed for school the next day, upset and shaking and waiting to find out which of my favourites was next. B5 was the first fandom that welcomed me with open arms, sometimes literally, and it was the first fandom I wrote anything for that I was proud of. And it doesn't matter how many years pass, or how many other space operas come along, if I'm having an awful day I will still curl up with Soul Mates or Parliament of Dreams and it will make things better. I feel privileged to have seen B5 when it first aired. I was in the convention hall when we heard that s5 had been given the green light, but that Claudia wouldn't be returning. To me, it wasn't just a show but my first sense of fannish community.

Old fandom geek-out (B5 & TOS)

I had a lovely time on Thursday, finally having that long-delayed dinner with [livejournal.com profile] mizzykitty. After far too much sushi, we went back to mine to mainline B5 (she hasn't seen it! A possible new convert, hallelujah!) and geek out. It was ever so much fun, and it got me thinking.

I also gave in to the inevitable and purchased S1 of the newer, brighter, more CGI'd remastered ST:TOS S1 boxset. It is, in a word, lush. ST:TOS squeeing )

I'm headed to bed now, to try to reset my body clock. Got to bed far too late last night, after a truly smashing party at [livejournal.com profile] mossman's. But it's work again on Monday, so needs must...

Fannish 5: Five times a character I like did something wrong

Tomorrow, I am writing my dissertation. For real, this time, as it's due on 1 September and I have *counts* 10 days off work in which to write it. The research is done, and I've mostly planned it, so it should just be a case of sitting down and writing it until it's, well, written. Then sending it to people to rip to shreds, and re-writing it until it doesn't suck. Then having a ball. An actual ball, will ballgowns and everything.

In the meantime, we have [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 asking us to name five times that a character you like did something wrong -so I did, with spoilers for S2 Buffy, S1 Rome, S4 Babylon 5, S3 Alias and S3 West Wing. )

Five things my first fandom taught me

Taken from [livejournal.com profile] penknife. My first fandom was Babylon 5, as it was the first fandom i wrote stuff for, and thought up stories for. Technically, ST:TOS was the first show I ever devoted myself to watching, but as I was about ten years old, I didn't register it as anything more than entertainment. Babylon 5 made me sit up and take notice, and it formed my perceptions of what being a fan actually entailed. Later on, I would apply those lessons back to the ST:TOS as a reader - never a writer - and to the Buffyverse as both.

Babylon 5 S1 & S2 - essential viewing

I'm visiting [livejournal.com profile] monanotlisa in a couple of weeks, and with me I shall take season 1 of The West Wing, and also Some Episodes of Babylon 5.

The goal is, of course, to get our lovely lady hooked on The Greatest Show of All Time (tm) before having to go back to rainy England. This must also be accomplished without spending every waking hour in front of the tv, as it's Karneval, and dancing must be had. Flist - I beseech you! Below you will find a list of all season 1 and season 2 B5 episodes. The ones in bold are the ones that we definitely have to see (for arc-purposes, or because they rock), the ones struck through are ones I definitely don't want to bother with, and the rest I'm not sure about. Help!! Opinions, thoughts, guidance - maximum b5-impact, with a bare minimum of 'filler' episodes. Possible??

Thoughts, comments? [livejournal.com profile] queenspanky, I am looking in your direction. I distinctly remember skipping several episodes from season 1 in order to get you embroiled in arc-heavy stuff, and then dangle season 4 in front of you, teasingly, listening to the pleas for mercy. Ah, good times...

Today, I found out that Claudia Christian is

1) living in the UK

2) maybe possibly perhaps about to be in a UK theatre play, and touring to boot.

This is because I happened to sit next to a casting director during my lunch hour at Starbucks, and we got chatting.

That is all.
