kangeiko: (tony stark making iron man)
A very quick but glee-filled post squeaking about all the lovely goodies I received for fic swaps over the last few weeks! They are all fantastic and I want to thank my lovely, lovely authors for the amazing gifts. Go, give them some love! *heart eyes emoji*

I've already posted my [community profile] smutswap fic (a Quark/Odo fic, (love is) the cherry on top), and I ended up defaulting on [community profile] waybackexchange due to RL stresses. But I did write something for [community profile] hurtcomfortex . It ended up being MCU again, Tony/Rhodey -

Additional Tags: Canon Injuries, Arc Reactor Issues, Post-Iron Man 1, Tony Stark Needs a Hug, Hurt Tony Stark, James "Rhodey" Rhodes Needs a Hug, Tony Stark Has A Heart

And now, for my gifts! First up is [community profile] smutswap , where I received some delicious Snape/Black ficcage -

Coreum (3471 words) by BiffElderberry
Fandom: Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Sirius Black/Severus Snape
Additional Tags: Anal Sex, Sex Pollen, First Time, Anal Fingering, Blow Jobs, Overstimulation, Enemies to Lovers, Barebacking, Semi-Public Sex
Summary: Coreum flowers, specifically the pollen was used in love potions, Severus reminded himself, trying to focus on the recipe and uses, in order to distract himself. Particularly in potions designed to cause a lust filled response. Exposure to the pollen without proper protection would result in an elevated hormone level and cause the infected to desire to shag. He could definitely feel that. He also knew that the best way to cure it was to have sex - a cruel twist of fate in his opinion as most people working with coreum flowers were making the potion because they couldn’t get laid.

For [community profile] waybackexchange I was gifted a lovely and adorable Quodo fic which really lifted my spirits -

kangeiko: (lister/rimmer)
I have successfully survived the 1 year anniversary. It was as stressful as you would expect, but it was good that we made the trip and did everything we were supposed to. It was also incredibly tiring, and I came back ready for a holiday (and greeted by a lot of people asking "how was your break?" which never ceases to be the worst question. I answered with "it was a family commitment" which seemed enough for people to drop it).

I also managed to get both my [community profile] space_swap and my [community profile] smutswap assignments in on time, hallelujah. In fact, the [community profile] space_swap collection is already open and there are some great works in there! My delicious gift is linked below - it was just what I needed to brighten my day! Lovely, spot-on characterisation of Lister and Rimmer, and a sweet friends to lovers transition (with some self-sacrifice as my bullet-proof kink), it was everything I ever wanted in this ship. <3 Thank you, mystery author!

Both of which are fantastic!

Also, not part of the swap but still a rec I wanted to share, is this wonderful vid for the Ladies of Marvel:

In other fandom news, I signed up for the [community profile] wipbigbang  with my endless MCU Stony WIP. What does this mean? Well, the good news is, it'll be finished by the deadline, which is great. The bad news is that I can't post anything until the deadline has passed, so there will be a bit of a moratorium on updates until the end of July. However, it should hopefully be accompanied by some lovely fan art, so definitely looking forward to that. Given my sporadic updates over the last few months, I doubt anyone will notice, honestly. (I was aiming to finish it by Endgame, laughsobno. We're going to see Endgame on Sat 27th so I will be buried under a rock Thurs-Sat to avoid spoilers, and will likely then come home and sob and write.)

Finally, I had a bit of an AO3 kudos milestone hit during the last couple of weeks, and it made me realize just how long I've been on AO3. It'll be 10 years this winter. I should do something for that, but I'm at a bit of a loss. Any suggestions?
kangeiko: (SQUEE!)
Guys. GUYS. I got my [community profile] chocolateboxcomm  fic and SOMEONE WROTE ME S5 BESTER/GARIBALDI!!!!!!!!!

Excuse me while I hyperventilate because this has made me SO happy! Mystery author, whoever you are, ILU. I have wanted this since I saw S5, oooooh, TWENTY YEARS AGO. AND AND AND AND not only is it S5 Bester/Garibaldi, it's done so gloriously well????? Like, ok yes we know that it's an ulta non-canon hate!ship HOWEVER if someone were given the task of MAKING IT canon I could totally see them going down this route and Garibaldi's reaction is particularly spot-on. He notices so much, and there is this brief moment of absolute terror when Bester is in his mind and that will now forever be a nightmare for Michael and even if it happens for the most benevolent of reasons it will still terrify him. And we have a flustered Bester who is SO not happy with how this is going and this was NOT THE PLAN GODDAMIT and Garibaldi - once he figures things out - is just so full of schadenfreude and pure delight in Bester's misery and I WANT A MILLION SEQUELS WHERE GARIBALDI EXPLOITS THIS NEW KNOWLEDGE TO THE FULL OH MY GOD. asdjgkJAS;akll;ekwjdhlKJS I AM SO HAPPY!

Run and read hoist with his own petard and give this fabulous fic some love!

I will do a proper rec post for chocobox a bit later on but I couldn't wait until then to shout about how happy I am!
kangeiko: (acid quill)

Day 2

Additional Tags: Kid Fic
Summary: Taking down the Federation might actually be easier than sorting out what's going on with Rojer's parents.

Why I love it: This fic made me ridiculously happy! With clones being a thing in the B7 universe, it's not even a crack premise, and it's beautifully written.

Thor glares at him.

Loki’s mouth twitches. “Also, it's the funniest thing that's ever happened to me.”

Why I love it: because I can't read it without laughing, and it's also incredibly true to the characters' voices.

Yuletide!

30 Dec 2018 08:58 pm
kangeiko: (SQUEE!)
I haven't posted for a million years. I'm definitely going to try to be better about that in 2019, because 2018 sucked quite a bit and I think that my preferred method of 'bottling everything up and refusing to discuss anything with anyone or express myself in any way other than silent rage' may perhaps not have been as emotionally healthy as I had originally supposed.

However, although 2018 sucked and should die in a fire, I did do some things that helped. Now, that's not to stay that I continued doing them, or even that I was consistent in doing them, but I tried out a bunch of stuff, and it did help, so I'm going to try doing it a bit more.

The first thing that I did which helped was making time to write. That sort of trailed off by about July time (work conspiring with house stress to grind me into fine powder) but I got back into it (sort of) for Yuletide, so I will try again.

Speaking of Yuletide, I want to squee over my lovely gifts! Look! Look at all the goodies! I really, REALLY needed a good Yuletide this year, and my lovely Yuletide Santas delivered in spades.

First of all, my gift:

Another Birthday (1214 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Nanny
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: C.C. Babcock & Niles (The Nanny), C.C. Babcock/Niles (The Nanny)
Characters: C.C. Babcock, Niles (The Nanny), Fran Fine, Maxwell Sheffield
Additional Tags: Birthday, Banter
Summary: It's C.C.'s birthday and she wants to forget all about it and celebrate it at the same time. Niles has other ideas.

Why I love it: it's perfectly in character, and gives us both the banter of the show plus the flashes of sweetness between CC and Niles that made me love this show. CC doesn't want to be made a fuss of (except that she does); Niles is his usual mean self (except when he's being adorable). This was so lovely, and beautifully written!

I also received two lovely treats as well!

Charcoal and Kindness (102 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Nanny
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Relationships: C.C. Babcock/Niles (The Nanny)
Characters: C.C. Babcock, Niles (The Nanny)
Additional Tags: Birthday, Birthday Cake, Kindness Gone Wrong, Sort Of, Humor, Yuletide Madness, Yuletide Treat, Baking fails, Romance
Summary: C.C. bakes Niles a birthday cake. It goes about as well as can be expected.

Why I love it: it's adorable. Sweet and fluffy, with a little frisson of flirtation at the end, and I can picture Niles's face perfectly.

Shelter (626 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Seafort Saga - David Feintuch
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Nicholas Seafort/Edgar Tolliver
Characters: Nicholas Seafort, Edgar Tolliver
Additional Tags: Wilderness, Fever, Yuletide Treat
Summary: Nick and Tolliver spend a night in the wilderness.

Why I love it: aaaaaaah, it's Nick looking after Tolliver, of COURSE I love it! Nick at his martyr-best attempting to nurse Tolliver back to health, only for Tolliver to immediately turn the tables the moment he's able to sit up. I love this look at Nick playing nursemaid, and his slow realisation of what Tolliver means to him.
kangeiko: (acid quill)
I've got this week off so I'm making a bit of an effort to catch up on a few fandom bits and pieces. First off, given what has been happening to the LJ servers, I'll no longer be cross-posting there. I'll also be taking down more sensitive posts, including photos etc. I won't delete my LJ because I use it to read communities, but if you follow me on both, please be aware that I'll only be (sporadically) updating my DW.

Secondly, although I was signed up for Yuletide this year, I sadly had to default fairly early on due to health issues. However, I received some amazing gifts just to same. These are so wonderfully in character, and I am absolutely thrilled with them. Please do give them some love!

I also received a fantastic Top Gear fic for the TGS Secret Santa, but as it's in a locked comm I won't link to it directly unless/until it's posted publicly. Suffice to say, it's fantastic and I am a very happy reader!

And I suppose I should do a year in fic retrospective?

First up is the Secret Santa fic I *did* manage to complete, for the TGS Secret Santa.

The Honorable Schoolboy (5215 words) by kangeiko

Summary: The race over, the trophies presented and the champagne spilled, the crowd thought the lights above the circuit were part of the show.
"What’s that?" Gerhard asked, pointing.
Alain squinted up into the bright flicker, the ground beneath him feeling uncertain, as if he was a little boy drunk on a thimbleful of sherry. "A comet," he said, sounding a bit doubtful, and then everything went dark.

I also watched the new Sherlock, which was... well, it had some plot issues. The first few that occurred to me, in no particular order: Read more... )

Sorry for bringing logic to a nonsense party. I had to phone my mother and rant at her down the phone while she laughed helplessly at my rage.

Do better, show. Do better.
kangeiko: (atia of the julii)
I've spent the last week in a haze of "am I really on holiday?" followed by "I am so tired and must sleep", so I haven't had a chance to post about the awesome history exchange, which went live a week ago. Authors have already been revealed. I haven't had a chance to go through all the wonderful fic, but historical fiction is my go-to happy place, so I'll be making my way through them in the coming days. But before then, a couple of recs.

So, first up is my lovely gift fic:

Light before us (555 words) by sevenofspade
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Ancient History RPF
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Livia Drusilla, Octavia Minor
Summary: Livia visits her sister-in-law.

This is such a great fic, I love it! Livia is so calculating and thoughtful in this, and I loved her slow assessment of Octavia, and their almost-truce. Beautifully done.

One other recommendation:

Reine Mère (10908 words) by Selena
Chapters: 3/3
Fandom: Historical RPF, 16th Century CE RPF
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Catherine de' Medici & Elisabeth de Valois, Catherine de' Medici & Claude de France, Catherine de' Medici & Marguerite de Valois, Claude de France & Marguerite de Valois, Henri II de France/Catherine de' Medici, Catherine de' Medici & Diane de Poitiers, Catherine de' Medici & Francis I. of France, Henri II de France/Diane de Poitiers
Characters: Catherine de' Medici, Élisabeth de Valois | Elisabetta di Valois, Claude de France (1547-1575), Marguerite de Valois, Mary I of Scotland | Mary Queen of Scots, Diane de Poitiers, Francis I. of France, Felipe II de España | Philip II of Spain, Henri II de France, Gaspard de Coligny, Henri IV de France, Henri III de France, Clarice Strozzi de' Medici
Additional Tags: Mother-Daughter Relationship, Motherhood, Power Dynamics, Character Study, Female-Centric, Parent-Child Relationship, Parenthood, Daughters
Summary: Catherine de' Medici and her daughters: what forms a woman, a mother, a queen?

I adore Catherine de' Medici and Selena captures her perfectly here - her ambition, her ruthlessness, and her weaknesses, left tender and exposed in the shape of her children. I loved her relationship with Margot most of all.

I also wrote a fic for this exchange -

i have cut a ribbon of skin from another man's body (4333 words) by kangeiko
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Ancient History RPF, Greek and Roman Mythology
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Olympias/Zeus, Olympias/Philip II of Macedon
Characters: Olympias, Zeus, Philip II of Macedon
Summary: She meets the god four times in her life, in four different guises.

I'm really glad I managed to finish this in time. The submission turned out to coincide with my first week back from the US, so I was burning the candle at both ends, so to speak. Many thanks to rhodanum for hand-holding as well as a sterling beta job.
kangeiko: (Default)
I hope everyone is having a fantastic holiday season. This year, I participated in several fic exchanges which means I got awesome gifts to open before/during Christmas day and if you haven't read them yet, you totally should.

For [community profile] yuletide , I got the absolutely amazing you and i are a collection of unfortunate events, which is a Rush fic and so wonderful it took my breath away. It gives the James perspective on the Niki crash, and it does it with such delicacy of touch and neatness of phrase that it left me grinning like a loon. James's inability to work out what exactly his feelings are - other than he has plenty of them - also rung true for me, as did Marlene finally sighing and kicking Niki into sorting it. This fic is wonderful and you should all check it out!

For f1secretsanta I got The burden of things unsaid, which is a wonderful Sebastian/Mark fic. Seb/Mark is my guilty pleasure and this fic so wonderfully captures the contrariness of Seb's feelings for Mark. The Valencia crash made me think, but how could Seb NOT run to check he's ok?? And that is exactly what he does - however you feel about someone, when you see something like that, you check they're ok. And Sebastian in this fic is so mixed up and confused about his own feelings for Mark that he can't do much to stop them bubbling to the surface.

For topgearslash secret santa I got Night Manoeuvres, which is James/Jeremy h/c and nailed all my kinks. James having nightmares? Check. Jeremy awkwardly caring & trying to help? Check. Awkward first kisses? Check. NNnngggggg bulletproof kinks, I am not kidding. This is so perfectly in character and so deftly done I defy anyone to not fall in love with it.

Secret authors, one and all - thank you! You have made my Christmas reading a joyous affair indeed! <333

(For anyone wondering where I've got to, btw, I'm now mostly active on tumblr under the same user name, and squeeing over Top Gear and F1 for the most part, so come say hello there!)
kangeiko: (yuletide)
It's Yuletide! I hope everyone had as much fun writing. I haven't written in ages, certainly not since August, so it was lovely to find myself writing lots of little things. Nothing too ambitious, it has to be said, but I am still fairly satisfied with how the finished pieces turned out. This year, I wrote 1 main assigned, 1 pinch-hit, 2 full-length treats, and 1 mini-treat for Madness. Virtual cookies for whomever identifies them correctly.

More to the point, I was the lucky recipient of not one, but TWO lovely gifts! Run, do not walk, to read these, for they are both lovely and estremely happy-making.

How To Shorten Tedious Nights (2608 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Top Gear (UK) RPF
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Jeremy Clarkson, James May, Richard Hammond
Summary: James always gets a little melancholy in the winter, and Jeremy decides to be better at cheering James up than Richard is.
Why I love it: It’s Jeremy being a good friend! And, of course, the moment he decides to cheer up James, he is clearly going to be the most awesome person ever at cheering someone up. After all, how hard could it be? This fic is all kinds of lovely. I am a real sucker for friendship!fic, and this one made me especially happy. The Meccano (and the echo to James's gift to the injured Richard) was an especially nice touch.

*

Salvation (1432 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Seafort Saga - David Feintuch
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Nicholas Seafort/Edgar Tolliver
Characters: Nicholas Seafort, Edgar Tolliver
Summary: Nick tries to save Tolliver. Tolliver has words with him.
Why I love it: because even when he’s injured, Tolliver’s first instinct is to protect Nick. And Nick has this tendency to realise how much someone means to him only after they’re dead, so it was SO happy-making to see it happen while Tolliver was still alive to be fussed over.

*

And then there is the rest of the archive! I am not even going to pretend that I have made a dent in reading through it; I have mostly been dipping in and out. Anything over 10k words has been sent to my e-reader to be read offline, so there will be a time-lag in reccing those. But here are a few short & delicious goodies to enjoy, in no particular order:

The Dancers (6533 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: 12 Dancing Princesses (Fairy Tale), Fairy Tales & Related Fandoms
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Summary: Private detective Marie Slade is landed with a strange case that just keeps getting stranger. Will she be able to solve the mystery before it's too late?
Why I love it: this is such a dark and creepy story, and it doesn’t pull its punches. A beautiful cross between fairy tales and noir.

*

The Sticking Place (2944 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: 15th Century CE RPF, Hunger Games Series - All Media Types
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: Major Character Death
Characters: Lucrezia Borgia, Cesare Borgia, Richard III of England, Marguerite d'Anjou | Margaret of Anjou, Henry VI of England
Summary: Nobody talks about the Fifth Annual Hunger Games. There are good reasons for this.
Why I love this: I really didn’t think that I’d buy the premise, to be honest, but it is beautifully done and you find yourself engrossed in the fight. And there could only be that ending, of course.

*

The Very Secret Diaries of Saint Augustine (1185 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: 4th & 5th Century RPF, Confessions - Saint Augustine
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Relationships: Saint Augustine/OFC
Characters: Saint Augustine, Saint Jerome
Summary: 404
Correspondence Jerome continues. Infuriating. Do not understand why he does not see my point! Translation of "gourd" vital to understanding of gospels.
Why I love this: it’s Bridget Jones’s Diary crossed with St Augustine. There are NO WORDS.

*

Fidelity (1465 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Cairo Time (2009)
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Juliette Grant/Tareq Khalifa
Characters: Juliette Grant, Tareq Khalifa
Summary:

“You’re better at sending postcards than you led me to believe,” she said.

“And you,” he replied, “are much worse.”

A few years later, Juliette and Tareq meet again.
Why I love it: because these are the characters, captured precisely as they were in the film, but a little older, a little sadder. It’s so gentle and so sincere, I adore it.

*

The Price of a Favor
(1922 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Babylon 5
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Timov
Summary: All Timov wants to do is live quietly.  With Cartagia on the throne, that may not be an option.
Why I love it: beautiful piece for a favourite – if often overlooked – character.

*
In Flagrante (2048 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Babylon 5
Rating: Mature
Relationships: G'Kar/Londo Mollari
Characters: G'Kar, Londo Mollari, Delenn, Vir Cotto
Summary: Three times Londo and G'Kar were caught in the act: one happy, one angry, one sad.
Why I love it: I started off laughing, then sighing, and finally crying. Londo & G’Kar have all the feels.

*

The Ultimate Cash Crop (1531 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Nextwave (Comic)
Characters: Elsa Bloodstone, Monica Rambeau, The Captain, Aaron Stack, Tabitha Smith
Summary: In which pointsettias are surprisingly similar to broccoli.
Why I love it: because I nearly wet myself laughing. TRUTH.

*

La reine scélérate (2656 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Les adieux à la reine | Farewell My Queen (2012)
Rating: Mature
Relationships: Marie Antoinette/Gabrielle de Polignac, Marie Antoinette/Sidonie Laborde
Characters: Gabrielle de Polignac, Marie Antoinette, Sidonie Laborde
Why I love it: look at that pairing. OMG. And it’s so beautifully written, so lovely and so acidic at times, with everyone so fascinated and repulsed by MA in equal measure. I haven’t seen the film yet, but I adore French history, especially M.A. and I loved this.

*

Quite Ridiculous (1915 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: QI RPF, Sherlock (TV), Mary Poppins (1964), Top Gear (UK) RPF
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Stephen Fry, Alan Davies, Mary Poppins, The Stig, Sherlock Holmes, John Watson
Summary: Alan hasn’t been told the names of today’s guests in advance – supposedly due to scheduling issues, but probably, he now thinks, so that he wouldn’t assault the producer.
Why I love it: because this completely sold me on the premise, and has the ultimate staring showdown: Holmes vs Poppins.

Another batch will come at a later date, but given my internet access, I suspect not before the reveal.

So, after much flanick, I was able to write a few treats for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide . The reveal -

up, up the long delirious burning blue for [personal profile] destina
Fandom: Top Gun
Characters: Maverick/Iceman
Warnings: Major Character Death
Summary: Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth / And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings ... Maverick is re-assigned to Bosnia. He's not prepared for it, not in the least.
Salome Dances for [personal profile] selenak
Fandom: The Borgias
Characters: Lucrezia Borgia/Giulia Farnese, Cesare Borgia, Vannozza dei Cattanei
Warnings: obligatory Borgia incest warning
Summary: Lucrezia is quite taken by the lovely Giulia Farnese

The Winter Queen for [archiveofourown.org profile] sloppycronkite
Fandom: Game of Thrones (TV)
Characters: Daenerys Targaryen/Viserys Targaryen
Warnings: obligatory Targaryen incest warning
Summary: Daenerys knows it's just a matter of being patient. Things will be better once Viserys is king.

*

I am also able to thank my lovely Yuletide authors! I was doubly-blessed this year with not one, but two wonderful fics. Both of them are sweet and happy, and made me squeak with joy on Christmas Day. Thank you so much to [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth  and [archiveofourown.org profile] Serenade , you guys are awesome!

"Unless I'm very much mistaken..." by [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth
Formula 1 RPF, Senna/Prost.
This is my main fic, and absolutely wonderful. It's the Senna/Prost relationship through the eyes of a young fan, who goes to the Brands Hatch GP in the hope of winning Ayrton's affections for herself. I love this story to bits, it's absolutely brilliant. From the setting - it's Brands, you guys, I practically live there half the year these days! - to the flashes of the motorsport world, to the Senna/Prost relationship itself, this is hilarious and heart-warming.

Homecoming by [archiveofourown.org profile] Serenade
Seafort Saga - David Feintuch, Seafort/Tolliver
This is my lovely treat from Serenade (I totally knew it was you, lol!), who has managed the impossible: funny, happy fic in the Seafort Saga universe. I know, right?! I love it. Tolliver is fed up of Nick's unreasonable demands re: the redecoration of his office, so drags him to Ikea. This is cracky and hilarious.

*

A couple of [livejournal.com profile] yuletide recs. I haven't really had a chance to do much reading, but what I have read I have enjoyed a lot.

Please, please please by [archiveofourown.org profile] AdaptationDecay
John Lewis adverts
This is lovely! I love the adverts anyway, I think they're brilliant, and this fic manages to capture the spirit of them, and is also wickedly clever. It put a real smile on my face. Plus bonus sekkrit crossover!

Turn a New Page, Tear the Old One Out by [archiveofourown.org profile] shrift
Breakfast Club, Bender/Brian
Bender gets a new life, and how. Lovely and well-realised future fic.

kangeiko: "i capture the castle" first line (literary indulgence)

Has everyone read this?

Effluent Engine, by N. K. Jemisin

Steampunk fiction set in New Orleans, with sexygirltimes and an awesome lead. Come for the premise, stay for the awesome!
kangeiko: artic ice with the sun in the background, and a sledge being dragged by dogs (TG adventure)
Safely back from Burundi. The placed was beautiful, but the conference was very stressful. I had hoped to have some time to write, and I did, a bit, but it really wasn't the most conducive environment for creativity, so I got neither of my [community profile] help_japan fics done, for which I apologise. I'd hoped to get them done by the end of June, but that's looking less likely by the second. I got back on Friday morning (by virtue of saying "sod it" and getting a flight a few nights earlier), and on Tuesday I leave again, this time for full immersion security simulations, complete with men in balaklavas and toting AK47s. Then I get back, repack, and set off for the Isle of Wight, to see an old friend I haven't seen for months. Then I get back, repack, and set off for women traveller-specific security training, i.e. The Rape Simulation Exercise. That one promises to be a barrel of laughs for all concerned. Then I get back, have a couple of days at work doing admin-y things, repack, and set off for the Superprix at Brands. Then I get back, have a week at work, and 84 celebrations are in that weekend. Then I have another week at work, and then pack and set off for the MSVR weekender at Brands Hatch. Then I get back, etc etc.

Basically, I will be lucky to have time to breathe, let alone write, for the next few weeks. GAH. My existential writer-angst is made all the more poignant by the fact that both of the people I bid on for [community profile] help_japan have already finished their fics for me, and OMG they are EXCELLENT. I mean seriously, overwhelmingly good. Stuck as I was with minimal internet connectivity, they even emailed me copies I could download and read offline, which made me a very happy camper indeed.

So, without further ado, I urge you to go and read the following excellent fic. Both are Top Gear RPF, J/J, and both are NC-17, so use your own judgement if RPF troubles you.

Wise Man by [livejournal.com profile] marginaliana [locked to AO3 registered users only] is set during the Middle East episode because, well, I was a little bewildered that no one was writing about it when it could be the source of so much angst. So I asked for it specifically, and [livejournal.com profile] marginaliana obliged with a sweet, angsty, hot fic from Jeremy's POV, centred around James's accident.

and

Well After All by[livejournal.com profile] blacktofade , which is also set during the Middle East episode, this time from James' POV. [livejournal.com profile] blacktofade asked if I had any particular wishes or kinks, and I immediately said, "awkwardness and uncertainty during first-time sex, please!" And Well After All delivers. Boy, does it deliver. Hot and funny and awkward and brilliant.

Both of these fics are absolutely amazing, and I swear I didn't arrange it to have one from James's POV and one from Jeremy's, but it made me insanely happy. You wanted Middle East fics? THESE ARE THE DEFINITIVE ONES.
kangeiko: (joanie in a red dress)
I am failing in reading [livejournal.com profile] yuletide in any sort of organised fashion, mainly due to not wanting to break the site, and wanting to leave feedback for the stuff I have read. So it's been slow going. But I did manage to read some pretty awesome stuff, so -

Firstly, let me tell you all about being a jammy git. Being a jammy git is receiving not one, not two, but THREE of my four requests. I nearly wet my pants with excitement. And they are all so bloody good, I squeked for quite a while in pure happiness.

Group Work and Earrings is a beautiful Breakfast Club fic that fixes one my main issues with the film, and that's how much of a crappy teacher Vernon appears to be, and how little work he seems to put into looking out for the troubled kids under his care. This is a wonderful fic that doesn't try to excuse his beahviour in the film, but instead acknowledges it, and moves it forward, to give all three characters (Vernon, Claire and Bender) a heart-warming but still realistic next few months. It doesn't promise that everything is going to turn out ok, but it doesn't sweep things under the carpet either (which is my issue with most Claire/Bender fics, tbh), and it really, really made me very happy indeed. GO READ IT NOW!

The Missing Letter is 17th CE RPF and an unexpected gift. You guys, LISELOTTE ON HER WEDDING NIGHT! My head exploded from the awesome. If you love the court of Louis XIV and all the intricacies and politics, and ever wondered what a practical, sensible, awesomeness-personified German princess would do if she was plopped in the middle of it... go and read it immediately.

and then, a few days later, I received a completely unexpected Madness gift:

Absolution is Seafort Saga - David Feintuch Nick/Edgar slash. The fact that this fic even exists I DON'T EVEN KNOW, MY BRAIN, IT IS DEAD FROM AWESOME. I have requested this fic for years and finally, FINALLY, someone has written it. YOU GUYS, MY WORLD, IT IS COMPLETE. For extra amazing bonuses, it reads like a missing scene from the book, pitch-perfect characterisation, and it is, of course, now my personal canon. I know that no one other than me has even read the books, but go and read the amazing hotness (and I have nearly all the books, I shall force you to read them immediately afterwards, this is gonna be great).

Other awesome fics I read:

Monday, Monday [Mad Men]: Post S4. “Oh, Monday morning, you gave me no warning of what was to be.”
Peggy and Joan have a chat the following Monday morning. If S4 had shown one additional episode, this scene would have been in it.

Whatever You Want to Call It [The Kingmaker (big finish audio) / Orlando - Virginia Woolf / 16th & 17th CE RPF / Doctor Who]: This is a sequel to a fantastic Doctor Who audio story called Kingmaker, which ends up with William Shakespeare dying at the battle of Bosworth Field, and Richard III being whisked off to Elizabethan England, where he writes the works of Shakespeare from Henry IV Part 1 onwards. Or does he...?
OK, so I only know normal DW, and haven't listened to the Kingmaker. But you don't need to know it, this story stands up on its own. It's hilarious and witty and sharp, and a must for any Shakespeare/Kit Marlowe/Queen Bess fan.

et in hora mortis nostrae [15th CE RPF]: Lucrezia mourns her brother's passing.
Well, we all know that I have a major weakness for the Borgias, particularly Lucrezia. This is a lovely portrait of Lucrezia mourning Cesare, her brother (while not forgetting Cesare Borgia, the monster). Brilliant.

And then some not!Yuletide2010:

Jackie and Marilyn [Mad Men]: There's no crying in the break room.
For yuletide 2009, wonderful Joan fic.

O tower not of ivory [Mad Men]: Having mono at Princeton was the best thing that ever happened to him.
For yuletide 2009, strong portrait of Paul Kinsey (who is, let's be honest, a bit of a pretentious git).

The case of the unwelcome owl [Sherlock/Harry Potter]: "So," said John, feeling out of his depth once again. "An owl." It was the same mild, politely curious tone of voice with which he had previously found himself uttering such things as: "So – three bags of frozen AB negative," and "So – a selection of human ears."
THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER. One day, Sherlock receives an owl inviting him to his cousin Luna's wedding. OF COURSE HE DOES. OF COURSE. It's one of those things you read and go, "these fandoms mesh so seamlessly, why does this not exist in canon?"

Spark [Harry Potter]: She hasn’t seen Arthur for days.  The clock on the wall tells her he’s only away working, neither bleeding nor dying.  But.
Molly is a mother, and a soldier. Sometimes both at the same time.
kangeiko: (Default)
Quite a few people have been raving over George Kirk (helloooo friends?skip=10million!), so I thought a small recs post in order. These are all TOS; has any George Kirk reboot fic been written yet?

TOS
- Final Frontier by Diane Carey: George Kirk joins Captain April on the maiden voyage of the Enterprise. I like this pro-novel a lot, it has fun bits, adventure bits, some great cameos, and really fleshed out George Kirk for me.
- Best Destiny by Diane Carey: another pro-novel with prominent George Kirk. Young Jimmy Kirk wants nothing to do with Starfleet, and resents being dragged out in the middle of nowhere by his 'fleeter dad.
- Kirk Ordered Another Beer by Syl: First-line challenge answer. James T Kirk isn't the only Kirk in ST canon.

And, also, a 'what if' in honour of the reboot:

What If? by Syl: The Klingons decide to go back in time and kill Kirk's parents when he is a child.
kangeiko: (Default)
Something has been bugging ever since seeing Jeffrey Dean Morgan as The Comedian, and I've just figured out what it is. In costume, cigar in mouth, grinning, he looks just like the late, great, Raul Julia, in either The Addams Family or in Streetfighter.

...

You think I'm crazy but, seriously. Look at a close-up of him grinning into the camera, without his costume getting in the way. It's creepy.

*

Also, everyone seems to now be writing Rorschach/Nite Owl fic. Being perverse, I'm not going to rec any, although I am vaguely interested in the fic being produced. No. What I'm going to rec is genderbend fic, because it is quite simply made of awesome.

My Body is a Cage by [livejournal.com profile] conceptofzero
"Jesus. Rorschach's a girl." The story of Wanda Kovacs. PG-13, Gen.

Why this rocks: Because Wanda is not secretly beautiful or gorgeous under that mask. Because she's still Rorschach, even in all the ways she's not our Rorschach. [livejournal.com profile] conceptofzero does an amazing job of fleshing out a different, yet still familiar, character, and giving her a fully-rounded background.
kangeiko: (Default)
The new President is busy overturning close to a decade of insane and borderline-psychotic policies:
- A lift on the ban on stem cell research.
- Dropping the global gag rule.
- Banning 'enhanced interrogation' and rendition - or as we like to call it, torture and kidnapping.
- Pledging to close Guantanamo Bay, and all ghost prisons.

Other stuff has also happened that shock me beyond words:

The good:
- Laurent Nkunda is captured in Rwanda. If you don't know who General Nkunda is, he's a born-again Christian who happens to be the leader of the rebel armies doing their fair of raping, killing and mutilating across the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The DRC has requested that Nkunda be extradited. The worry now is that a deal may be struck or, worse, that he may be executed. Neither one of these options fills me with joy. But not having him running about with the killing and the mutilating and the raping? Plus, there is a small but still present chance that he might be put on trial. Which - would be a blessed miracle indeed.

The bad:
- New evidence of Gaza child deaths - what's shocking about this is not that children died (because when you wage a war in the middle of a city you're going to primarily kill civilians, let's not kid ourselves), but that Israel is still insisting that people were shooting at them. Looking at several of their targets - UN facilities, schools, groups of children - that's starting to wear a little thin. I'd like a real answer - and an investigation - of this.
- UN accuses Israel of using white phosphorous. For those who don't know what phosphorus does, imagine something that clings to you, that can't be removed, and that will stick until it burns right through you, through skin and muscle and bone. Now throw that stuff at a bunch of civilians, and watch even the smallest wound kill. The reports that this might have been used against civilians horrifying. I'm going to be following the investigation of this very closely indeed.
- Artic melt 20 years ahead of climate models - US researchers claim to have found evidence that accelerated melting has crossed a "tipping point" from which there is no going back.

***

Something not related to the Real World - and we can all be grateful -

Nextwave slash, by [livejournal.com profile] apiphile. I leave you with the image of the Captain helping Aaron try out his latest attachment. And I run away in the opposite direction.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Had a lovely, sedate time last night (sorely needed as I am still shaky on my feet), and had bacon butties and heaps of tea this morning. Bliss

Anyway, last set of recs before the reveal. I'm reading and reccing while my brother, who's staying with me over New Year, is watching Robots in the next room. Bless. :)

ROME

- Miles Fortunae
Pullo spirits Caesarion, Vorenus and Vorenus's family away, out of Rome and away from Augustus's grasp to help Vorenus recover. And it's going to be fine, because the Fates blew Pullo's thread a kiss while they were spinning it and, and, and, this is so amazingly lovely it made me sniffle a little through sheer happiness. It's so completely them, and they get their happy ending. *sniff*

*

I, Claudius

- Mater Patriae
Stunning portrait of Livia, before, during and after. She is, first and foremost, a woman of virtue.

*

Kim Stanley Robinson - Mars Trilogy

- Shalbatana
I forgot that this was fic and read it as being straight out of Red Mars; this fic is that good. Nadia and Hiroko go out to recover a rover, and reach a tentative understanding along the way. Bonus appearances by everyone, but especially Ann, who is all kinds of broken. *LOVE*

*

Terry Pratchett - Discworld

- The Unseen University Department of Inthaumation Science
A day in the life of the Discworld academics - hilarious and fun.

*

Transmetropolitan

- the new jerusalem
Spider starts out as a sports reporter, and, gradually, the Truth hooks him - and eats him whole. This also made me sniffle quite a bit.
kangeiko: (atia of the julii)
I didn't do much reading today, as I mostly slept and puttered about. But that means that I can get my recs caught up with my reading. (Otherwise at the end of the reading there will be fifty squillion recs to write and - no. I'm just not that disciplined.)

Anyway, Recs Post the Third, Grandson of Recs:

Dr Seuss - One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish

- Out of the Dark
Let me say it now - I have zero familiarity with Dr Seuss. It was not a big feature of Communism when I was growing up. BUT. I love rhyming little pieces, especially when they are sinister, and this brought the creepy and unsettling by the spadeful.

*

RPF - X-Files

- The Schizophrenic Critique of Pure Reason in Beckett's Early Novels
I am not a real fan of RPF, I confess. When I read it, I tend to do so guiltily, as if someone will find out and punish me for it. BUT. David Duchovny/Gillian Anderson: I had to try it. And here David finds out that Gillian is not Scully, and while she may be beautiful, she is not smart. And David likes smart. And - oh, yes, exactly. It's perfect, and a little sad.

Aside: For a brief moment (about three seconds of my life I'm never getting back) I loved Gil Grissom (from CSI) with a fiery, fiery passion. This lasted until I saw an interview with the actor who plays him, and it immediately became apparent that he is a complete airhead. I was utterly crushed, and developed a deep sense of foreboding that the people I had crushes on were merely acting smart, as opposed to being smart themselves (my major worry was for Anthony Stewart Head, and the cast of The West Wing). Luckily, they turned out to be able to carry on a conversation (or at least an interview), so disaster was averted. BUT. I completely understand David's disappointment in the non-existence of Scully. Yes.

(That explanation was a lot longer than it was meant to be. Possibly as long as the fic. Never mind.)

*

ROME

- The Aeneid
Pitch-perfect continuation from the end of the show, with Veronus - who is dead, no really, guv'nor - setting up house with Pullo to run the collegia and raise their multitude of kids. Including Aeneas, formerly Caeserion.

*

Deadwood

- The Enemy of my Enemy
Al makes his morning rounds, sometimes during S1. This is perfectly in character, and made entirely out of squee.

*

Blackadder

- The Birthday Party
Speaking of squee, Queenie has her twelfth birthday party, and Edmund has to go. Drat. BUT. There is cake! And Nursie! And hide and seek! And Lizzie/Edmund! It's like the lost kid!episode, and made me giggle madly.
kangeiko: (Default)
Some more recs from this year's yuletide. I'm a tiny way into the archive, so expect these to continue for a while.

Wall.E

- Try/Fail? - False Binary
A really beautiful look at EVE, and how she gradually attains sentience.

All there is and more
Wall.E wants a nextgen. EVE (eventually) agrees. This had me giggling helplessly, from Wall.E demonstrating procreation (Ta da!) through to the training wheels on the baby. Funny and occasionally touching.

*

10 Things I Hate About You

- Won't Be Your Winter
Aii! Kat Stratford is working at Princeton when Patrick shows up on her doorstep. And I am ridiculously protective of this movie, and feel that most fic doesn't do it justice. This does, and gave me the same glowy feeling that the movie did. Top marks.

*

Fables

- and all this peace has been deceiving
A short look at Bigby/Snow, and how they both live with the Wolf.

- this mirrored perspective
Snow and Bigby through the ages. Spot-on characterisation.

*

Fairy Tales (trad.)

- The Piper Is Gone
A lovely origin story for the Pied Piper, and it works beautifully.

- Never To Be Told
The youngest brother prefers life as a swan. Achingly beautiful, and fitting seamlessly within the original story.

- Verity
I LOVE THIS FIC BEYOND WORDS. It's not even fanfic, really, as it is an original, complete fairy tale about Princess Verity, and how she saves (and marries) her prince. It is as inventive and fulfilling as all the best fairy tales, and I am wildly jealous of the writer who came up with it. *covets*

*

Galaxy Quest

- The Rebirth of Brandon Wheeger
This had my inner geek squeaking like a very squeaky, happy thing. Brandon figures a few things out, and gets to live the dream. As someone who grew up on Star Trek, this worked amazingly well for me.
kangeiko: (Default)
Some of the fics I've read and loved thus far, in no particular order. I've yet to work my way through the entire archive, so there will be loads more to follow later.

First up, it's the fic that I received from my mystery author - who is, quite simply, a genius -

Transmetropolitan
- The Worst Thing That Has Ever Happened To Spider Jerusalem
Let me say this now: I nearly peed myself laughing. And I am a little ashamed, because I love Spider a great deal, and I should have been feeling pity at the horrendous day he had, but instead, I had to join Channon and Yelena in falling off my chair laughing. This is perfectly in character, and features the Filthy Assistants in fine form. There are also appearances from The Beast, Royce, and one other unexpected guest, much to Spider's chagrin. Mystery author - I salute you!

*

3:10 to Yuma

- Some Call it a Mercy
After the end of the movie, Ben Wade tries to get on with his life. I really liked the total lack of 'fix-it' here - Dan doesn't miraculously survive, and there's no happily ever after. Except that there is, sorta. William turns out right, in any case, which makes me happy.

- Mutual Solace
Wade/Evans slash, post-movie. Having said I don't like fix-its, I also... like fix-its. What can I say; I contain multitudes. I particularly like the gradual nature of this, and how the focus is the familiarity and growing friendship between the two men, as opposed to them falling into bed filled with lust.

- You Weren't Born a Killer (But You Can't Tell That No More)
Charlie Prince, in all his ruthless glory. One for all the Charlie fans out there who despair at seeing him written as a shiny lovely pretty boy. This Charlie is a complete bastard - a murderer and rapist many times over - who is still the Charlie we recognise from the movie.

*

The American President

- Two Women
A series of parallels between Mary, the President's first wife, and Sydney Wade. I liked how rounded Mary Shepherd came across in this.

*

Askewniverse

- Cell Mates
Clerks 2, how do I love thee, let me count the ways! This picks up after the end of the movie, and delivers on Jay/Silent Bob. Actually, the strongest thing about it isn't the slash - which always feels a bit odd to actually be realised, in the case of J&SB - but Randal's self-sabotage and quasi-homophobic rant. It's spot on, and includes some hysterical interjections from the donkey fucker.

*

Boston Legal

- Backwards and Wearing High Heels
This has cross-dressing Alan, oblivious Denny, and a Brad who is so shocked he may be having a coronary. Bonus feature: Shirley's clothing, and Alan using impeccable legal reasoning. Absolutely hilarious.

*

Deadwood

- The Law of the Wise
A wonderfully long, gloriously rounded look at Alice Isringhausen and what she did after departing Deadwood. Beautiful writing and sharp characterisations make this one a must read; bonus points for an awesome appearance by Silas, who is made of win (and always knows when to yield gracefully).

*

Ursula Le Guin - the Hainish Cycle

- Other Kinds of Men
The story of Therem and his brother, and how things went well, and how they went badly. This is beautifully written, like a lost chapter of the book.

- The Shadows Cast Behind You
Estraven in the kemmerhouse. Again, it's the beautiful language that makes this vignette a must read.

- Cinders and Snow
For all those who were left wanting something more during the long trek back. This delivers on the familiarity and alienness of someone in kemmer, and the low pulse of attraction/repulsion that would have been ever-present as they waited out the cold.
