kangeiko: (sex and the city)
Dear Yuletide Author,

Thank you so much for writing for me! Yuletide is my favourite time of year and I am really looking forward to reading my gift. You’ll see some common threads in my requests, and I hope they make sense. Basically I love fics that stick close to canon, I love found-family tropes and the comfort part of h/c. (I’m comfortable with the hurt part as well, as long as it isn’t too graphic or lingered over.) I’ve requested shippy prompts for the most part, but if I had to choose between shippiness and gen h/c, I’d choose the h/c, hands down. Basically - if I love a character, I want them to suffer (a little), and then be looked after (a lot).

My DNWs are also variations on a theme: please no graphic non-con (although references to it are fine), and please no AUs such as mer-people, mpreg, A/O/B, or anything that fundamentally changes the universe the canon is set in. Canon-divergent stuff is fine, though. I also like Maggie (TD) and Becky (Askewniverse) so if you include them in the fic, please don’t hurt them or have something awful happen to them, an amicable split is fine.

I haven’t written a long and detailed letter this year because I’ve come to the realisation that my likes and requests are actually pretty consistent year-on-year, even if the fandoms and character change somewhat. I like complicated, morally grey characters, and I like sarcastic banter. I like found-family and h/c. And - if you’re writing sex scenes - I like a focus on kissing. It turns out I’m a simple soul at heart, and I just like seeing my faves be happy & loved.... after a bit of suffering, of course. Anyway, my Yuletide tag links to all my letters over the years if you want to get a flavour of what I have asked for and loved in the past, but I feel like this pretty much distils it down to the fundamentals. I’m a simple soul at heart!

Please have fun writing, and I am sure to enjoy whatever you come up with.

True Detective: Rust, Marty

I watched S1 of True Detective this year (late to the party, I know) and honestly, it blew my mind. I am fully on board with what a great character Rust is, and I was fascinated with his relationship with Marty. I’d love to see more of Rust being taken care of, and slowly opening up to Marty. I feel like the show laid them open to each other to such an extent that they would have to work to build up their walls - to the rest of the world, if nothing else - before they could return to some semblance of normality. I don’t have anything too prescriptive in mind here - I’d love something close to canon, that develops their relationship. I love first-times, h/c, deep links between messed up people, and found-family. The show is unrelentingly brutal and I’m not expecting sunshine and roses, but please don’t break them beyond repair.

Studio 60: Jack Rudolph

I went back and forth on whether to ask for Jack AND someone, but I realised that I was primarily interested in Jack himself and his relationship with the wider S60 ensemble. I feel like we only see him interact with them when something has gone wrong and he is trying to find a solution, sometimes at a cost to himself. I’d love to see them standing up for him. Maybe something goes wrong with the court case? Maybe there is some sort of scandal and the media has a field day? Maybe his drinking isn’t as under control as he pretends? If you’d like to write shippy fic that would also be very welcome. I don’t have a preferred pairing, I’d be happy seeing him with anyone, but some suggestions - maybe Simon, following on from their rapport at the end of the series? Jordan and/or Danny, given that they’re the closest to him? But I’d be happy with anything, really. As before my bullet-proof links are found-family, h/c, and grumpy arseholes being looked after.

Askewniverse: Dante, Randal

Speaking of grumpy arseholes... I am still, 15 years later, astonished that Randal managed to tell Dante that he loves him (even if I don’t quite believe his assertion that it’s a purely heterosexual way). I miss these utter idiots. Who would have thought that Randal would be the more well-adjusted of the two? I’d love to see a getting-together story (with Becky, if you like, or hand-waving an amicable split if you’d prefer). Alternatively, I will always any and all h/c, and I feel like we haven’t seen Randal vulnerable (beyond that one scene with Dante). Having something external & upsetting force that openness would be interesting. Maybe playing off the alt ending to Clerks (only this time Randal is the one caught in the robbery) or something less eventful but still upsetting (a family argument, or a break-up) - basically forcing a crack in that facade and actually having Dante do some work to cheer him up or reach him or connect with him somehow. I don’t really mind whether you keep it light and fluffy as the canon, or if you go a bit darker, but please don’t damage them beyond repair.

Thank you so much for writing for me! Yuletide is the fic exchange I try to do every year, and it's such a great experience that I guarantee whatever you come up with will make my day. I've included some broad likes/dislikes below to help out. You can also see what I've written in my letters in previous years as I've been pretty consistent year on year.

Likes
1. Gen, slash, het, whatever. I’ve requested pairings in my prompts below, but if any of the pairings don't work for you, rest assured that I love drama and significant looks just as much.
2. Plot! I do love me some plot. Failing that, angst! Also - humour! Fun! (That doesn't narrow it down, does it?)
3. First-times in shippy fic. I tend to be less interested in a couple after they have been happily settled or wrapped up in each other, and a lot more interested in how couples get together. If it's an established relationship, I like the conflict in the relationship - maybe something unresolved between the couple, or some bone of contentious that could drive them apart.
4. Conflict. I like change in fic - change in relationships, change in preconceptions, change in situation, good old-fashion action-adventure - and having characters disagree or take opposing sides.
5. Protectiveness / family / team / squad feelings, found!family and loyalty. People having each others' backs.

Do Not Wants:
1. Underage, non-con/rape, character death.
2. The common sex-based squicks (scat, watersports, snuff, etc). I'm also not a fan of alpha/beta/omega fic, knotting, mpreg, heavy BDSM, etc.
3. Character-bashing. If I've nominated a fandom I tend to love all the characters.
4. Universe-altering AUs (e.g. everyone is a merman, or Hogwarts students, etc). Canon-divergence AUs (e.g. character X makes choice B instead of A, "everybody lives" AUs, etc) are loved, though, so if that's your cup of tea, go wild!
5. Yuletide-specific "do not like" (i.e. I like them fine outside of Yuletide, but not in Yuletide): crossovers, metafic, author inserts, breaking the fourth wall.

And now, the requests - and, as always, optional details are optional!

2018 was definitely the year of MCU fic. I wrote 123,474 words (!!), not counting my CHM Secret Santa fic, and almost all of those were in the MCU. Two (Memento Mori and till human voices wake us) are WIPs I hope to finish in the first half of 2019. The CHM Secret Santa is still anonymous so I will edit this to add that fic in once it has been revealed.

kangeiko: (SQUEE!)
I haven't posted for a million years. I'm definitely going to try to be better about that in 2019, because 2018 sucked quite a bit and I think that my preferred method of 'bottling everything up and refusing to discuss anything with anyone or express myself in any way other than silent rage' may perhaps not have been as emotionally healthy as I had originally supposed.

However, although 2018 sucked and should die in a fire, I did do some things that helped. Now, that's not to stay that I continued doing them, or even that I was consistent in doing them, but I tried out a bunch of stuff, and it did help, so I'm going to try doing it a bit more.

The first thing that I did which helped was making time to write. That sort of trailed off by about July time (work conspiring with house stress to grind me into fine powder) but I got back into it (sort of) for Yuletide, so I will try again.

Speaking of Yuletide, I want to squee over my lovely gifts! Look! Look at all the goodies! I really, REALLY needed a good Yuletide this year, and my lovely Yuletide Santas delivered in spades.

First of all, my gift:

Another Birthday (1214 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Nanny
Rating: General Audiences

Relationships: C.C. Babcock & Niles (The Nanny), C.C. Babcock/Niles (The Nanny)
Characters: C.C. Babcock, Niles (The Nanny), Fran Fine, Maxwell Sheffield
Additional Tags: Birthday, Banter
Summary: It's C.C.'s birthday and she wants to forget all about it and celebrate it at the same time. Niles has other ideas.

Why I love it: it's perfectly in character, and gives us both the banter of the show plus the flashes of sweetness between CC and Niles that made me love this show. CC doesn't want to be made a fuss of (except that she does); Niles is his usual mean self (except when he's being adorable). This was so lovely, and beautifully written!

I also received two lovely treats as well!

Summary: C.C. bakes Niles a birthday cake. It goes about as well as can be expected.

Why I love it: it's adorable. Sweet and fluffy, with a little frisson of flirtation at the end, and I can picture Niles's face perfectly.

Summary: Nick and Tolliver spend a night in the wilderness.

Why I love it: aaaaaaah, it's Nick looking after Tolliver, of COURSE I love it! Nick at his martyr-best attempting to nurse Tolliver back to health, only for Tolliver to immediately turn the tables the moment he's able to sit up. I love this look at Nick playing nursemaid, and his slow realisation of what Tolliver means to him.

Dear Yuletide Santa,

I am so looking forward to reading your wonderful fic! This is possibly my favourite time of year and I cannot wait to rip open my gift & glory in all the fic goodness. I've included some broad likes/dislikes below to help out. You can also see what I've written in my letters in previous years as I've been pretty consistent year on year.

Likes:
5. Protectiveness / family / team / squad feelings. People having each others' backs.

Do Not Wants:
1. Chan, shota, underage, however you term it.
2. Non-con, rape.
3. Character-bashing. If I've nominated a fandom I tend to love all the characters.
4. The common sex-based squicks - chan as mentioned, also scat, watersports, snuff, etc. I'm also not a fan of alpha/beta/omega fic, knotting, mpreg, heavy BDSM, etc.
5. Yuletide-specific "do not like" (i.e. I like them fine outside of Yuletide, but not in Yuletide): crossovers, metafic, author inserts, breaking the fourth wall.

And now, the requests - and, as always, optional details are optional!

Eminem (Musician)
Eminem, Machine Gun Kelly

I followed the back and forth on this little spat with great interest, and I love the fact that MGK's lyrics are pretty much alternating between insults and praise for Eminem. I also love the fact that the reaction from pretty much everyone else acknowledges this, and MGK's almost painfully obvious crush is treated as, er, painfully obvious to the extent that it doesn't even need pointing out.

I have missed emslash something fierce; there's hardly any about these days, and what was there before is dying a death as LJs get deleted and websites disappear. (Thank goodness for the wayback machine, is all I can say.) So if you're on board with writing emslash, I would be immensely happy! Doesn't have to be Eminem/MGK; I'd be thrilled with any emslash in the context of the Eminem and MGK spat. Maybe MGK runs into Eminem during an event and decides to clear the air? Maybe Dr. Dre finds the whole spat hilarious and Eminem is just mostly embarrassed by it? Maybe Eminem is busy being a dad & raising his kids & doesn't have time to worry about some star-struck kid trying to get his attention?

If slash isn't your cup of tea, I'd be thrilled with anything that has an amused Eminem dealing with an increasingly invested MGK. (Or Eminem dealing with an MGK not in the best situation & feeling obligated to step in.)

Things that make me happy in this fandom - Eminem's focus being on his kids, his sobriety being important to him, and his increasingly dad-like jokes (like his ineptitude at selfies). (Yes, OK, I have a thing about people aging and finding that not-cool things are actually pretty wonderful. I am here for 40-something Eminem and him going to bed early with some steeped ginger because concerts are exhausting and his voice is hoarse, or him doing parent-teacher night, or attending his daughter's graduation out of sight so he doesn't take away from her big day, or anything else incredibly normal.)

*

The Nanny
C.C. Babcock, Niles

How much do I love CC/Niles? Let me count the ways! I love how they can tear strips off each other, and how funny they are; I love how they pretend to hate each other but they miss each other if the other is away; I love the easy sexual chemistry and how it's so ridiculously wholesome; I love how actually this sort of relationship would be incredibly messed up outside of a sitcom...

Ooops, did I write that last bit? Yup, much as I love the romantic fic for CC/Niles, the one thing that I am fascinated about is how much damage they've done to each other. Sure, it's funny to see Niles having to wait on CC after she broke her leg - except that he tripped her. It was funny that a despondent Niles was baking cakes with CC's face on them, except that she was committed at least partly as a result of him triggering her breakdown. I love them so much, but they are not gentle with each other at all, and often CC bore the brunt of it.

I'd love to see that relationship taken - at least a little - outside of the sitcom setting. Sure, we get our (sort of) happy ending. But that doesn't mean that CC is magically well-adjusted, or that the low points of her history with Niles have magically gone away. Dear writer, if you're able to give us a little glimpse of how they navigate those murky waters, I would love you forever.

If that sounds far too depressing, then something set before they get together would be lovely. Maybe it's a landmark birthday, and CC is feeling especially conscious of it, and Niles does something nice for her? Maybe Niles has some bad news from home & CC is the one who is there & helps him?

Things I love in this fandom - wit, humour and consequences! I love them on equal ground, more or less, and I try to avoid anything with large doses of humiliation.

*

Seafort Saga - David Feintuch
Nicholas Seafort, Edgar Tolliver

I love this series and I am not even a little ashamed. *g* If you're scrolling through this letter out of curiosity, I wrote a quick fandom pimp - with a focus on this pairing - many years ago, and you can find it here.

Let me get it out of the way first: my favourite character in the entire series is Edgar Tolliver. He puts up with so much of Nick's bullshit and calls him out on the worst of it, and I love it. I love how worried he gets when Nick is missing or hurt, and I love that they're of an age and that they have seen each other at their worst. I love that Tolliver has permission to touch Nick, and that this is so fraught - it's the thing that got him demoted, and yet now he gets to do it whenever he wants. And not just that, but Nick depends on him for it sometimes, and - and - and my god, look at how they interact and tell me they're not married, I won't believe you. Tolliver is Nick's steady rock.

So, um. Take him away? I always love Tolliver-in-peril situations, and it wouldn't be Yuletide if I wasn't requesting one. (It's my bulletproof kink.) Maybe Nick finds out that, yup, he's normally OK with holding the line when people are taken hostage, but not if it's Tolliver. Maybe Tolliver is injured & Nick has to look after him. Maybe they go off into Nick's exile and Nick still has all the guilt of Tolliver willingly following him. Maybe someone figures out how much Nick relies on Tolliver & tries to get him out of the way - whatever, go wild!

Alternatively, maybe something sweet - Nick actually trying to do something nice for Tolliver? Tolliver completely disregarding regs & doing something sweet & thoughtful for Nick's birthday? Tolliver & Nick having to parent the endless number of waifs and strays that Nick brings home?

I'd love some slash on this, but I'd be happy with some good old angst - Nick does that so beautifully!
kangeiko: (acid quill)
Dear Yuletide Santa,

Thank you so much for writing for me! I can't wait to unwrap my present Yuletide morning. I've included some broad likes / dislikes below, but in general I'm pretty open to a whole host of possibilities and relationships, so please write what feels right to you.

kangeiko: (wasting time online)
My dear Yuletide author,

Firstly, my sincere apologies for not updating this at the same time as the requests went out - hopefully this is not too late.

Secondly, please do not stress about the fic, I'm pretty eclectic in my tastes and as long as you enjoy writing it, I am sure that I will enjoy reading it.

But a vague encouragement is no one's friend, so here are some specifics -

Things I like:
Long, plotty fics and character development. If I have to choose between smut and character development or some in-character dialogue, I'll always choose the latter. I love the relationships between characters - the long histories, the in-jokes, the little barbs, the petty annoyances and the deep trust. I've picked characters that tend to be part of a double-act, so anything drawing on them relying on each other, interacting beyond their comfort levels, defending each other, would be welcome.

I also love ensemble fics. I love the bit characters, the peripheral characters that have beautiful story arcs that perhaps don't get as much attention as our main leads. So if your heart lies in writing gen fic, then please go ahead.

I love episodic fic, or case fic - I have requested fics in fandoms where there is an element of police work, or mystery solving, or problem solving. I love "baddies of the week" and solving the crime and saving the day and snarking at each other while doing so.

I'm comfortable with m/m, f/f, m/f, and any other combination, as well as a gen fan, so please write what you are comfortable with.

Things I don't like: character-bashing, "it's all X's fault", or fridging female characters if you go for the slash route. I'd also like to request no graphic non-con (referring to it if it's part of a case is fine, but no graphic descriptions) and no child or animal death, please.

My requests:

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
Partners Fisher, Jack Robinson, Dorothy Williams

I would love an episode-type fic, with Phryne and Jack (and Dot?) teaming up to solve a murder. Or anything with character studies, or gen friendships fics, would also be very welcomed.

Life on Mars
Gene Hunt, Sam Tyler

I'd welcome any episode-style fic for these two. Or something tentatively shippy? I do like Ashes to Ashes, but I would prefer to keep the nihilistic aspects of the world away from LoM, which I recall with a certain fondness (and no devils, deaths or monsters feature). So - something vaguely optimistic, if not necessarily fluffy?

The Laundry Files - Charles Stross
Bob Howard, James Angleton

James Angleton is fine and busy terrorising junior staffers, I won't hear anything to the contrary.

In other words, anything set pre- The Rhesus Chart would be very welcome! Maybe Bob really DOES need to attend a training course and it's not a deep cover? Maybe Angleton struggles with some parts of humanity more than others? Maybe the Auditors pay a visit? Anything in the tone of the books would be great!

Red Dwarf
Dave Lister, Arnold Rimmer

I would love anything set during the first few (1-6) seasons. If you feel up for it, something shippy would be very welcome. Maybe Rimmer finally does something nice for Lister? Maybe the GELFs pursue them (hjinks etc)? If slash isn't your cup of tea, anything gen-friendship would be welcome.
kangeiko: "i capture the castle" first line (literary indulgence)
I love this time of year! Dear Yuletide Author, I am so excited about Yuletide each and every year and I am sure that I will love whatever fic you choose to write. But vague encouragement is no one's friend so here are so of the things I love - I hope that some of them will be helpful!

1) I love the relationships between strong, interesting people, especially if it wouldn't be something that would occur to them at first glance, whether canonical or not. I'm a shipper, but I find a good gen exploration of a relationship just as satisfying, if not more so, than a shippy story.

2) I love character studies and long, thoughtful looks at a character's motivation, which is probably reflected in what characters I find interesting. I like characters that aren't generally liked in the world they are in, or the people around them; ones that suffer and survive and show strength of character. I love hurt/comfort as a trope, especially if the one offering comfort is reluctant, or not on the best of terms with those they are trying to comfort. I love best friends sticking together. I love a united front in the face of adversity. I love rule-breakers.

3) I don't really hate any characters in the fandoms I have requested, so please no character bashing. This is especially the case in opting for slash couples - I may love characters A and B and slash them, but I wouldn't want to see character bashing of A's wife or husband as part of that.

4) My squicks are fairly standard. Sex-based squicks are graphic sexual violence, underage, watersports, scat, humiliation, extreme or ritualised BDSM (including where fics are set in BDSM universes). I'm also not a fan of alpha/beta/omega, amnesia fics, baby fics, AUs (e.g. high school settings or similar), meta tropes or otherwise breaking the fourth wall.

5) Things I love in fiction in general: long, glorious world-building; characters that have UST and spark off each other; hurt/comfort, first times in shippy fic, great feeling in a world that doesn't permit it, character studies (especially of female characters), clever dialogue, vivid storytelling and a sense of peril. I love them, and therefore want them to suffer, of course.

My requests:

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
(Phryne Fisher, Jack Robinson)
I adore Phryne. She has such a firm sense of herself, and is so utterly comfortable with who she is. Her confidence and generosity to all those around her make her such a wonderful character. And I love how, despite himself, Jack is drawn to how vividly Phryne lives. I like how he's willing to surrender control to her, and I love, LOVE seeing her in charge or defending him.

I would love to see a fic where Phryne is protective of Jack in some way. Maybe he's injured on a case? Maybe he goes after her in S3 and feels out of his depth? Maybe she finally takes him to bed and leads from start to finish. Whatever you like - as long as it has the two of them being delightful with each other I would be thrilled.

If you're more on an ensemble writer, anything with a murder mystery would be amazing! I love how protective Phryne is of Dot and Jane, and their whole domestic set-up.

I discovered MFMM a few months ago and have been obsessed with Phryne's eyes and Jack's mouth. Honestly I could stare at them for hours. Anything which captures their vividness and the unresolved tension between them would be amazing.

Star Trek: Dwellers in the Crucible - Margaret Wander Bonanno)
(Cleante Al-Faisal, T'Shael)
My copy of this book is in tatters. I've had it for years and re-read it dozens of times. There is a line in there where McCoy says that Cleante and T'Shael are mirror images of Kirk and Spock, falling all over themselves with self-sacrifice, and I buy that 100%. I would love to see them after they are freed. What do they go on to do? (I know that they appear in other books and we shall never mention that again.) Maybe Cleante takes T'Shael home with her to meet her mother? Maybe they go on a holiday somewhere entirely new? Hell, maybe some diplomatic incident years later brings them to the negotiating table where they run into the Romulan Commander again. Hell, given the Kirk/Spock parallels, maybe throw some of the standard fic cliches at them - emergency marriage! must pretend to be lovers and get there in reality! everyone else assumes they're together! Jasmine plays matchmaker! Whatever you like. I would love to see them supporting each other and having some (happier!) adventures.

I adore Cleante and T'Shael. Anything where they get to recover from their captivity would be amazing.

I know that Cleante has a a significant amount to work through, and I appreciate that you may want to explore that in fic. I would request that any flashbacks or other references to her assault is no more explicit than that in the books. Thank you.

A Knight's Tale (2001)
(Wat, Geoffrey Chaucer)
Wat and Chaucer's interactions made me laugh so much! I love how loyal Wat is to Will, and how he takes it upon himself to check Chaucer out, so to speak. I love Chaucer's ability to hold a crowd, and complete inability to win any bloody gambit. Maybe his gambling habit continues, and Wat has to rescue him? Or maybe Wat's mouth gets him in trouble and Chaucer's gets them out of it. Or maybe they just tumble into bed and have much to say about it. I love the other characters as well, so if you'd prefer to do more of an ensemble piece that would also be fantastic.

This film always makes me laugh. Wat's face getting redder and redder in his inarticulate rage for some reason makes me smile even now. Anything that is warm and funny would be welcome in this fandom.

But most of all dear author - please have fun and enjoy Yuletide! I promise that I will love whatever you write.

I hope everyone is having a fantastic holiday season. This year, I participated in several fic exchanges which means I got awesome gifts to open before/during Christmas day and if you haven't read them yet, you totally should.

For [community profile] yuletide , I got the absolutely amazing you and i are a collection of unfortunate events, which is a Rush fic and so wonderful it took my breath away. It gives the James perspective on the Niki crash, and it does it with such delicacy of touch and neatness of phrase that it left me grinning like a loon. James's inability to work out what exactly his feelings are - other than he has plenty of them - also rung true for me, as did Marlene finally sighing and kicking Niki into sorting it. This fic is wonderful and you should all check it out!

For f1secretsanta I got The burden of things unsaid, which is a wonderful Sebastian/Mark fic. Seb/Mark is my guilty pleasure and this fic so wonderfully captures the contrariness of Seb's feelings for Mark. The Valencia crash made me think, but how could Seb NOT run to check he's ok?? And that is exactly what he does - however you feel about someone, when you see something like that, you check they're ok. And Sebastian in this fic is so mixed up and confused about his own feelings for Mark that he can't do much to stop them bubbling to the surface.

For topgearslash secret santa I got Night Manoeuvres, which is James/Jeremy h/c and nailed all my kinks. James having nightmares? Check. Jeremy awkwardly caring & trying to help? Check. Awkward first kisses? Check. NNnngggggg bulletproof kinks, I am not kidding. This is so perfectly in character and so deftly done I defy anyone to not fall in love with it.

Secret authors, one and all - thank you! You have made my Christmas reading a joyous affair indeed! <333

(For anyone wondering where I've got to, btw, I'm now mostly active on tumblr under the same user name, and squeeing over Top Gear and F1 for the most part, so come say hello there!)
kangeiko: (bookworm)
Dear wonderful Yuletide writer,

Thank you so much for writing for me! Yuletide is one of my favourite times of year and I always look forward to seeing what Yuletide Santa has left me under the tree. This year, my requests are all thematically grouped, so I hope that if one doesn't suit the others are more accessible! Rest assured that I will adore whatever you come up with, because there is so little fiction for ANY of the things I requested that the mere existence of more fic will make me incredibly happy.

My tastes have been pretty consistent over the years, and you can see my prior year Yuletide author letters tagged under 'yuletide'. Here are some quick points on what I like and what squicks me, both general and fandom specific.

General thoughts:

1) I love the relationships between strong, interesting people (or weak, interesting ones!), especially if it wouldn't be something that would occur to them at first glance, whether canonical or not. My requests this year are mostly focused on antagonists, but what I tend to find interesting about them is how they can be moved beyond that point of friction - or how that friction can coexist even as the understanding between them grows. I love gen just as much as slash!

2) I love character studies and long, thoughful looks at a character's motivation, which is probably reflected in what characters I find interesting.

Fandom-specific:

Formula 1 (Classic) RPF
Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost,

My feelings, let me show you them! I am absolutely heartbroken that, just as Alain and Ayrton were finally moving beyond their history as antagonists, Imola happened. Who knows what their relationship could have become if Ayrton hadn't died so tragically young? And of course, I love the aggression just as much as the sweetness in Ayrton, and how he can be sometimes so careless of others and at other times so solicitous. He was aggressive to the point of arguably causing accidents, but was the first on the scene if one of the drivers was hurt. So... I wonder what would have happened if, in one of their earlier clashes, an accident DID happen, and Alain WAS injured. (Nothing permanent, but serious.) How would Ayrton have approached that? What would have happened to their relationship? How would things have turned out?

Alternatively, I wonder what happened during those months where Alain was retired - and therefore no longer a threat - and Ayrton would phone him constantly and beg him to come back. How did that even work? What did Alain think? What did Ayrton think? Did they ever discuss it in person?

It's all so tragic, so if you can give them a crumb of comfort, it would make me incredibly happy.

Formula 1 (Modern) RPF
Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso

Ack, these two! Let me hug them to my bosom. I have some weird feelings about their relationship. I like how they're both top dogs, and how they respect each other as drivers. And I like how Fernando DOESN'T like Sebastian Vettel, who is not only Kimi's close friend, but also likely his replacement at Ferrari. I like them fighting, I like them working as a team, I like Fernando being weirdly possessive over Kimi re: Sebastian, I like Kimi kicking arse in 2015 and Fernando being able to approach him as a friend rather than a rival... I'd come up with deep thinky thoughts here, but mostly I like them sparking off each other. Kimi's friendship with Sebastian is a bonus, as is Fernando's friendship with Mark - having Sebastian and Mark helping them get together (because they are stubborn idiots) would make me squeak like a small child with inhuman glee.

Rush (2013)
Niki Lauda, James Hunt

Hmmm, so the film versions of these two are very different from the RPF versions, so I'm focusing on the film relationship here - i.e. they didn't know each other, they weren't friends, they most certainly didn't live together. They were antagonists. And then we have the Nurburgring, and James's feelings on that. And Niki's recovery. And that recovery is NOT easy, it's not quick. And although in real life James didn't punch a reporter for insulting Niki, I like the film version where he does - where he feels possessive and protective over this person whom he doesn't think of as a friend but he's not an enemy, either. Again, I like the complicated relationship between these two, and I'd love to read something where James decides to mend some bridges, somehow, and has to fight Niki tooth and nail for every inch of friendship.

Thank you!

Wow, I haven't posted here in a little while. I've mostly been stolen by tumblr, which is easier to post to from a mobile as I spend far less time doing social media stuff on my laptop. I was thinking about getting a laptop that's a little more portable, which would allow me to write more and blog more; any recommendations?

In the meantime, I wrote some fic and saw some theatre, so here is a short round-up of activity since, well, the middle of last year.

Fic wot I wrote:

Matins (Sherlock BBC)
"I think I would be perfectly alright if you died," Sherlock said over tea. He glared at Mycroft and very deliberately took a sip of Darjeeling.

spilt milk (The World's End)
Five things that never happened to Gary King (and one that did).

I finally finished this! It took me a few months, and in the meantime, I received some glorious fan art for it which made me weak at the knees.

the ninth month (Coriolanus - Shakespeare / Coriolanus - Rob Hastie & Josie Rourke)
Each step further from her body has led to this. Volumnia has no illusions.

For [livejournal.com profile] yuletide I wrote the following:

"Why, Holser?"
"I don't know. Maybe now the Captain's dead, being first middy doesn't seem so important. Maybe it's the way Alexi looks at you sometimes, when he thinks you don't see."

Alexi isn't the hero of this story. He can't even remember his lines.

Slowly, gradually, the pursuit progressed.

Ouroboros (Frankenstein - Nick Dear) for [archiveofourown.org profile] Kahvi

Reviews of theatre/opera/ballet wot I saw fairly recently:
- King Charles III (Almeida Theatre)
- King Lear (and here) (National Theatre)
- Henry V (Noel Coward Theatre)
- Carmen (Royal Opera House)
- Prince Igor (London Coliseum)
- Richard II - RSC (and here) (Barbican Theatre)
- Coriolanus (and here) (Donmar Warehouse) (& more meta on the play & this interpretation of it is here). My Coriolanus tag is fairly full.
- American Psycho: A New Musical Thriller (Almeida Theatre)

Things that I saw that I haven't gotten around to reviewing are the Let the Right One In (Royal Court Theatre), Matthew Borne Swan Lake (Sadler's Wells), Red Velvet (Adrian Lester - Tricycle Theatre), The Weir (Brian Cox - Wyndham's Theatre), A Taste of Honey (with the wonderful [personal profile] selenak , at the National Theatre), The Full Monty (Noel Coward Theatre), Versailles (Donmar Warehouse), 1984 (Almeida Theatre), Walmsley String Quartet (Royal Albert Hall).

non- theatre events: I attended the Sherlock Apple store event (photos and comments here and here or check out my applelock tag), the Royal Television Society "Anatomy of a Hit" lecture & drinks thing (comments and photos here and here, or check my rts tag), Malala Yousafzai's talk at the Southbank Centre (comments & photos here),

The above reviews are all on tumblr. I'm thinking of starting a blog or tumblr or something focused specifically on theatre reviews. I've been going more and more, and although I do the obvious things like collecting programmes, not writing down my immediate impressions means that I lose quite a bit of the memory of the performance, especially the quirky little things that won't then be recalled easily for a programme perusal. I'm still trying to work out the best format for that; I suspect that Wordpress (then crossposted to tumblr / LJ / DW) might be the best approach. If I treat it as a fairly rigorous this I may well be able to stick to it; it's only ad hoc blogging that I can't seem to get the hang of.

Speaking of things I can't get the hang of, I appear to be doing too many Nine Worlds things. Like, far too many. Two panels for sure, and maybe helping on others? This may not seem too many, but I have recently handed in my notice (because I have a wonderful new job that I am VERY excited about) and Nine Worlds is falling fairly soon after I start. I don't think this is a problem, but it means that I need to sit down and think out what I need to be doing for all the things I've committed to, rather than blindly trusting that things will work out in the end (because that way needless stress lies).

In order to avoid needless stress, I will be taking a glorious 3 weeks holiday in between finishing current job and starting new job. This will probably involve a few days abroad, although the details are tbd. My mother seems fairly keen for us to go away to a spa in the Czech Republic for a week (I'm not entirely sure where in the Czech Republic, I suspect it's in the middle of a forest as all spas tend to be), and I'm fairly keen to spend a few days back in Paris doing art things, so who knows. It's quite nice leaving that all up in the air deciding nearer the time.

My Italian study has faltered since Christmas (as in, I've done fuck all since then), but this is mainly because I've actually been rather sick over the last quarter and have also been job hunting. Work has also been so spectacularly bad, we are the source of astonished entertainment for other teams. If I saw these plotlines on a show, I'd complain they weren't realistic. But that's mostly resolved now - plus, fantastic new job. So phase 2 of my new year's resolution (fix work, health, long-term life goals) is now moving on to a focus on health. This probably wasn't helped by eating doughnuts today, but let's assume that I'll be, er, healthier somehow with the Easter impetus. I'm definitely going to be indulging in some pilates classes, and will actually dust off that gym card as well. I suppose Italian self-study is the sensible thing to slot into my new schedule at this time as well... well, we'll see.
kangeiko: (yuletide)
Dear Yuletide Author,

Thank you so much for writing for me! Yuletide is one of my favourite times of the year because I adore my tiny little fandoms, and it is often the only chance I get to read any fic for them. So the fact that you are willing to write for my tiny/non-existent fandom makes me incredibly happy.

My tastes have been pretty consistent over the years, and you can see my prior year Yuletide author letters tagged under 'yuletide'. I am sure that I will adore whatever you come up with, but a vague squeeing sound is no-one's writing aid, so here are some quick points on what I like and what squicks me, both general and fandom specific.

General thoughts:

1) I love slash, het, gen and femslash, and my requests reflect that. I love the relationships between strong, interesting people (or weak, interesting ones!), especially if it wouldn't be something that would occur to them at first glance, whether canonical or not. To illustrate this, some couples I love in big fandoms are Snape/Harry, Snape/Black, Draco/Hermione etc in HP (so, those that generally would hate each other on sight!); Steve/Tony, Natasha/Clint, Tony/James Rhodes in Avengers (a mix of reluctant teammates and best friends); Buffy/Faith, Giles/Buffy, Cordelia/Xander in Buffy (again, a mix of those that were close to begin with, and those that hated each other); Kirk/Spock, Sarek/Amanda, McCoy/Spock in Star Trek (unlikely couples, best friends and teammates). If you opt for a slash, het or femslash fic, I picked characters that I would be happy to see together in a relationship. (Except for Cesare and Caterina. Cesare/Lucrezia or Caterina/Lucrezia would rock, though.)

2) I love character studies and long, thoughful looks at a character's motivation, which is probably reflected in what characters I find interesting.

3) I don't really hate any characters in the fandoms I have requested, so please no character bashing. This is especially the case in opting for slash and femmeslash couples - I may love characters A and B and slash them, but I wouldn't want to see character bashing of A's wife or husband as part of that.

Fandom-specific

Request 1: Seafort Saga - David Feintuch (Nicholas Seafort, Edgar Tolliver)
Sign-up details: What I love most about Nicky is his ability to commit himself entirely to a course of action. What I love most about Edgar is how he is able to back Nicky fully in public, and then rip strips from him in private when he doesn't agree.

There is so little fanfic available for this fandom, and yuletide is more or less my only chance of acquiring more. So anything that showcases these two, snarking at each other while everyone else has heart attacks at the familiarity, would make my day. Maybe someone overhears or sees Edgar being too familiar, and Nicky has to step in before his second gets squished? Maybe one of Nick's many enemies figures out his never-ending capacity for guilt and self-sacrifice and decides to kill two birds with one stone by kidnapping Edgar? My personal favourites in their timeline are the HMS Victoria return journey from Hope Nation, Tolliver going crazy trying to find Nick on Earth when he runs off to find Annie, and post-retirement Tolliver sticking to Nicky's side through exile, revolution, and a second bout of child rearing. My personal headcanon is that sometime after they meet again in Book 3 they end up together, but if you're more inclined to gen that makes me equally happy.

I request these characters every year, mainly because requesting fic seems to deliver fic. No fool I, basically.

Why do I love this fandom so much? Mainly because Nicky is an idiot who seems to think that he is responsible for all the trauma in the world. Edgar is a no nonsense sort of person who thinks that Nicky is an idiot. Ergo, I love them. I love that Edgar basically threw his life away trying to save Nicky's (because either way, once that helicopter started spiralling out of control, Edgar was going to die... but Nicky didn't have to), and that Nicky can't unbend enough to overlook it, but can manage just enough to spare Edgar's life. I love Edgar's dignity, and the clear boundaries he sets up with Nicky - who should ostensibly have the power of life or death over him, but doesn't quite manage it - and the way all that dignity goes out of the window if Nicky is threatened. I love how much Nicky tries to fix everything wrong in the world, and how his sheer arrogance at thinking he is at fault if he can't fix everything is something that he trusts Edgar to call him out on. Like a walking, talking, snarking hairshirt.

What sorts of fic would I like? Any fic where thse two characters feature, because I love them so damn much. Nicky caring for Edgar is a bulletproof kink for me, and the closer Tolliver gets to peril, the more my heart flutters. Because Nicky has lost so damn much, and having the threat of taking Tolliver hang over his head is like the sword of Damocles. And Edgar - Edgar would die for him, Edgar would suffer for him... Edgar would go into exile and leave his family behind so that Nicky wouldn't be alone. Shippy fic for these makes me happy, but any gen character study of their relationship would also be loved.

Request 2: Rush 2013 (Niki Lauda, James Hunt)
Sign-up details:
I'm equally happy with gen or slash for these two!

I absolutely loved James getting into a fight with the reporter being cruel to Niki; Niki's slow but growing confidence in his own appeal - and how it is destroyed by the crash; Niki needing to watch James win 'his' points to force him through his recovery; way back when they were young and furious and arrogant and just as likely to kill each other off the track as on it. Anything that plays off the way they need each other in order to succeed would be very welcome.

I requested the film rather than the RPF because I don't actually know much about these two outside of the film. Suffice to say that the film inspired me to learn more about them. My knowledge of Niki is through the following generation of drivers - Prost and Senna and Piquet - so seeing him young and arrogant and ready to bash James's head in was lovely. I knew nothing about James Hunt at all, except for his nickname, which I always assumed referred to his capacity for being a bit of a bastard. As it turns out, he was a bit of a bastard who tended to crash spectacularly. Who knew?

The scenes I loved best in the film were when James beat up the reporter, while Niki stared at James winnning 'his' points and made himself get better. These two really do bring out the best - and worst - in each other, and they're both bastards, really. I do enjoy that. I loved Niki being recognised in Italy, and the whole racing world and how slapdash James's racing team was, and their very different approaches to racing. I'm a bit of a motorsport afficionado, so anything set in that world would make me very happy. Again, happy with gen or slash for these two.

Request 3: 15th Century CE RPF (Caterina Sforza, Cesare Borgia, Lucrezia Borgia)
Sign-up details: Caterina was held prisoner by Cesare for some time. Anything about her interacting with the Borgias, particularly Lucrezia (and Lucrezia's relationship with Cesare at that point) would be very welcome. It's a pretty brutal part of Caterina's life, and my headcanon is that Caterina was raped by Cesare and did not seduce him as he claimed. I'd therefore ask that you do not include any graphic non-con, please (although if you go towards the - consensual - femslash of Lucrezia/Caterina, that would be welcome). If you can work in someone telling off Caterina's blasted self-absorbed sons, that would make me very happy.

This is the only request where I have requested characters that I wouldn't necessarily want to see together (Cesare and Caterina) due to the circumstances of their interaction. I love Italy, and this time period, and am fascinated by the Borgias and their enemies. I am especially fascinated by Caterina, who was easily as ruthless and capable as Cesare, and how they fought each other. I also adore Lucrezia, and her relationship with Cesare. Given that Caterina was such a public prisoner, and so obviously ill-used by her captors (and her blasted children; honestly, her dratted sons needed someone to beat some sense into them!), I wonder what Lucrezia thought of her, and her captivity? How did the two women relate to each other, if they met? How did their relationships with Cesare change as a result? Ship-wise, I'd be happy with Caterina/Lucrezia, or Cesare/Lucrezia, but please do Cesare/Caterina. Gen fic would also be very welcome! My Italian is fairly basic, but I know this part of history well, so if you feel inspired to world-build, please do!

Request 4: 18th Century CE RPF (Marie Antoinette, Marie Louise of Savoy | Princess de Lamballe, Yolande Martine Gabrielle de Polastron | Duchess of Polignac)
Sign-up details: I'm fascinated by Marie Antoinette's relationships with the Duchesse de Polignac and the Princesse de Lamballe. Anything about them from a happier time, perhaps at the Petit Trianon, or around the birth of Marie Antoinette's babies, would be fabulous. I realise that Marie Antoinette was first in the Polignac circle and then became friends with the Princesse de Lamballe subsequently, so please do not feel pressured to include all three if they don't work in your timeline - Marie Antoinette plus either the Duchesse de Polignac or the Princesse de Lamballe would be fabulous. Gen or femslash welcome!

OK, so, when I read about how the Princesse de Lamballe died, I cried for hours. When I read about how she was accused of having a relationship with Marie Antoinette, and how that led to it (at least partially), it got worse. Basically, I have a weakness for Marie Antoinette and her coterie of girlfriends and girl friends. Anything gen or femslash would be welcome for them, looking at a happier time for Marie Antoinette and her friends. Obviously, given the timeline, do not feel pressured to include all three - Marie Antoinette plus one or the other would be fabulous. Bonus points for amazing hairdos, Marie Antoinette getting on with her husband, any politics or meddling. A million bonus points for political statements through clothes (because, yes.) My French is serviceable and I know this part of history fairly well, so if you feel inspired to world-build, please do!

Thank you!

It's Yuletide reveal time! I remain without internets, trying to do this on my phone. My kingdom for broadband!

Anyway, I wrote 5 fics for 4 fandoms this year:

and I have told you this to make you grieve for saturnofthemoon

Deep Space Nine

Oh, beloved old fandom I don't date write for! I dared this Yuletide. This was such a lovely assignment to write, about Winn and Minister Jaro before the show starts. Well, before the show starts we know that Jaro was someone who mattered, otherwise he wouldn't have ended up as a Minister, and Winn was imprisoned for preaching the word of the Prophets. This little fic grew from there. I was lucky as I am much more comfortable with early DSN than later DSN, and the Occupation is a great opportunity for world-building. I had great fun writing this.

this obsessive idea for thefourthvine

Literary RPF

I've been staring at that Baudelaire prompt for a couple of years, waiting for inspiration to strike. I ended up writing about Manet and Baudelaire's relationship, and Baudelaire's great love, Jeanne Duval. I confess to knowing next to nothing about art history, but I do love Paris a great deal, so I guess it evens out!

innumeras errore vias for Kore

Classical Mythology

I ended up pinch-hitting this, but I think sometimes that helps! You get to do things you aren't really expecting that way. I love classical myths with an extra pinch of agency thrown in - agency then muddied by the gods or the fates - so that's where this Ariadne tale ended up.

with the shield (or upon it) for Serenade

Seafort Saga - David Feintuch

So, the challenge was to write something happy! Well, there are precisely two paragraphs in the entire series where Nicky and Vax are happy, so of course, I had to write about the water fight.

Deep Space Nine

The tiniest of tiny drabbles! Some Winn/Dukat from S7.

kangeiko: (yuletide)
It's Yuletide! I hope everyone had as much fun writing. I haven't written in ages, certainly not since August, so it was lovely to find myself writing lots of little things. Nothing too ambitious, it has to be said, but I am still fairly satisfied with how the finished pieces turned out. This year, I wrote 1 main assigned, 1 pinch-hit, 2 full-length treats, and 1 mini-treat for Madness. Virtual cookies for whomever identifies them correctly.

More to the point, I was the lucky recipient of not one, but TWO lovely gifts! Run, do not walk, to read these, for they are both lovely and estremely happy-making.

How To Shorten Tedious Nights (2608 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Top Gear (UK) RPF
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Jeremy Clarkson, James May, Richard Hammond
Summary: James always gets a little melancholy in the winter, and Jeremy decides to be better at cheering James up than Richard is.
Why I love it: It’s Jeremy being a good friend! And, of course, the moment he decides to cheer up James, he is clearly going to be the most awesome person ever at cheering someone up. After all, how hard could it be? This fic is all kinds of lovely. I am a real sucker for friendship!fic, and this one made me especially happy. The Meccano (and the echo to James's gift to the injured Richard) was an especially nice touch.

Salvation (1432 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Seafort Saga - David Feintuch
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Nicholas Seafort/Edgar Tolliver
Characters: Nicholas Seafort, Edgar Tolliver
Summary: Nick tries to save Tolliver. Tolliver has words with him.
Why I love it: because even when he’s injured, Tolliver’s first instinct is to protect Nick. And Nick has this tendency to realise how much someone means to him only after they’re dead, so it was SO happy-making to see it happen while Tolliver was still alive to be fussed over.

*

And then there is the rest of the archive! I am not even going to pretend that I have made a dent in reading through it; I have mostly been dipping in and out. Anything over 10k words has been sent to my e-reader to be read offline, so there will be a time-lag in reccing those. But here are a few short & delicious goodies to enjoy, in no particular order:

The Dancers (6533 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: 12 Dancing Princesses (Fairy Tale), Fairy Tales & Related Fandoms
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Summary: Private detective Marie Slade is landed with a strange case that just keeps getting stranger. Will she be able to solve the mystery before it's too late?
Why I love it: this is such a dark and creepy story, and it doesn’t pull its punches. A beautiful cross between fairy tales and noir.

Characters: Lucrezia Borgia, Cesare Borgia, Richard III of England, Marguerite d'Anjou | Margaret of Anjou, Henry VI of England
Summary: Nobody talks about the Fifth Annual Hunger Games. There are good reasons for this.
Why I love this: I really didn’t think that I’d buy the premise, to be honest, but it is beautifully done and you find yourself engrossed in the fight. And there could only be that ending, of course.

The Very Secret Diaries of Saint Augustine (1185 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: 4th & 5th Century RPF, Confessions - Saint Augustine
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Relationships: Saint Augustine/OFC
Characters: Saint Augustine, Saint Jerome
Summary: 404
Correspondence Jerome continues. Infuriating. Do not understand why he does not see my point! Translation of "gourd" vital to understanding of gospels.
Why I love this: it’s Bridget Jones’s Diary crossed with St Augustine. There are NO WORDS.

*

Fidelity (1465 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Cairo Time (2009)
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Juliette Grant/Tareq Khalifa
Characters: Juliette Grant, Tareq Khalifa
Summary:

“You’re better at sending postcards than you led me to believe,” she said.

“And you,” he replied, “are much worse.”

A few years later, Juliette and Tareq meet again.
Why I love it: because these are the characters, captured precisely as they were in the film, but a little older, a little sadder. It’s so gentle and so sincere, I adore it.

The Price of a Favor
(1922 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Babylon 5
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Timov
Summary: All Timov wants to do is live quietly.  With Cartagia on the throne, that may not be an option.
Why I love it: beautiful piece for a favourite – if often overlooked – character.

In Flagrante (2048 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Babylon 5
Rating: Mature
Relationships: G'Kar/Londo Mollari
Characters: G'Kar, Londo Mollari, Delenn, Vir Cotto
Summary: Three times Londo and G'Kar were caught in the act: one happy, one angry, one sad.

*

The Ultimate Cash Crop (1531 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Nextwave (Comic)
Characters: Elsa Bloodstone, Monica Rambeau, The Captain, Aaron Stack, Tabitha Smith
Summary: In which pointsettias are surprisingly similar to broccoli.
Why I love it: because I nearly wet myself laughing. TRUTH.

*

La reine scélérate (2656 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Les adieux à la reine | Farewell My Queen (2012)
Rating: Mature
Relationships: Marie Antoinette/Gabrielle de Polignac, Marie Antoinette/Sidonie Laborde
Characters: Gabrielle de Polignac, Marie Antoinette, Sidonie Laborde
Why I love it: look at that pairing. OMG. And it’s so beautifully written, so lovely and so acidic at times, with everyone so fascinated and repulsed by MA in equal measure. I haven’t seen the film yet, but I adore French history, especially M.A. and I loved this.

*

Quite Ridiculous (1915 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: QI RPF, Sherlock (TV), Mary Poppins (1964), Top Gear (UK) RPF
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Stephen Fry, Alan Davies, Mary Poppins, The Stig, Sherlock Holmes, John Watson
Summary: Alan hasn’t been told the names of today’s guests in advance – supposedly due to scheduling issues, but probably, he now thinks, so that he wouldn’t assault the producer.
Why I love it: because this completely sold me on the premise, and has the ultimate staring showdown: Holmes vs Poppins.

Another batch will come at a later date, but given my internet access, I suspect not before the reveal.

kangeiko: (yuletide status is flanick)
I'm stuck in the land of dongle internets. It is an annoying, low bandwidth world that is making me count the days until I get proper internets (24).

In the meantime, I did the first draft of my yuletide fic. I haven't written for absolutely ages, and managed a first draft, and I hate it. I hate it. I'm poking it with a stick, & it's with a beta, but. That feeling after a long dry spell? That.
kangeiko: (need a fucking drink)
I'm moving house tomorrow, therefore I have boxes everywhere & am not packed AT ALL. This is fine. I will have plenty of time to pack during the NO TIME I have allocated for this. #idiot

And then I have to do all the new!house things, like pick a broadband provider. Hivemind, what do we think about Virgin Media? Is the promised superfast connection really superfast?

Also, I have been too stressed to properly pay attention to, & restrain my parents during, the new!house shopping. This means I got home to find a shiny new stainless steel kitchen roll holder. WTF is this, I don't even have kitchen roll - but no, my mother had thought of this, and purchased me a giant pack. "Ah, I see you have bought the essentials," I said. "Yes," she said, not looking up, "I got the pastry brush and the parmesan grater, but I held back on replacing your piping bag. You'll be ok for a few weeks without one?" NO MOTHER, I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO. I guess it's good that I have the parmesan grater to comfort me during my difficult time.

Seriously, I love my parents, and they are unfailing generous, but I think they still think of me as a little girl leaving home for the very first time. My father wants to buy me some more miniature pots & pans, presumably to make tiny cakes. I feel like he's outfitting a doll's house. I have forbidden them from buying anything else whatsoever.

Colleague at work looked like she gonna cry today, so I gave her a hug. Audit time is never fun.

Also, Yuletide. I am still excited in principle, but the sheer exhaustion of moving house is sapping my energy & vim somewhat. Please send replacement vim.

Dear Yuletide Author,

Thank you for writing for of my fandoms! I tend to request obscure little fandoms with little or no fic, so rest assured that I will be thrilled to bits with whatever you choose to write. I go into more detail below on my general likes and squicks. I'd ask that, should you read the below and find that you don't especially want to write anything vaguely related to these prompts, you write something that you are comfortable with. In other words - the below is meant to help, not flummox. :)

Stuff I like:
1. Gen, slash, het, femslash, whatever. I’ve requested pairings in my prompts below, but if any of the pairings don't work for you, rest assured that I would be equally happy with strong words across the room as I would be with a steamy sex scene.
2. Plot! I do love me some plot. Failing that, angst!
3. Dialogue. Words! Words in people’s mouths! People having opinions, and arguments, and snarking at each other!
4. First-times in shippy fic. I tend to be less interested in a couple after they have been happily settled or wrapped up in each other, and a lot more interested in how couples get together.
5. Conflict. I like change in fic - change in relationships, change in preconceptions, change in situation, good old-fashion action-adventure - and having characters disagree or take opposing sides. I'm not generally a fan of schmoop, smarm or fluff.
6. Protectiveness / family / team feelings.

Stuff I don't like:
1. Chan, shota, underage, however you term it. I have trouble with anything below the age of consent (16 where I live);
2. Non-con, rape. I sometimes read it, but it's rare, and I normally find it very difficult to read.
3. Character-bashing. If I've nominated a fandom I tend to love all the characters.
4. The common sex-based squicks - chan as mentioned, also scat, watersports, snuff, etc. I'm also not a fan of alpha/beta/omega fic, knotting, mpreg, etc.
5. Yuletide-specific "do not like" (i.e. I like them fine outside of Yuletide, but not in Yuletide): crossovers, metafic, author inserts, breaking the fourth wall.

My requested fandoms this year are:

Seafort Saga - David Feintuch )

I feel like I'm cheating on LJ with DW, and on DW with twitter. I'm such a harlot, I just can't help myself. Anyway, that's why I haven't posted for a while. Also, it's easier to check twitter on my phone & tweet quickly, than it is to do DW posts. Although I have set it up to be able to do phone/email posts, so I don't know why I'm complaining.

I was pretty upset when I heard that Michael O'Hare died. Mira wrote beautifully on his death here (link courtesy of [personal profile] selenak ). Michael O'Hare was the first 'real' actor I met, when I was very young and at my first convention and hopelessly lost. He gave me a hug & Ruth helped me find where I was meant to be. I met the others then, too, and it was the S4/5 hiatus and the day when Claudia didn't sign her contract, and Ed was on stage telling people about how he nearly fell in a canal in Venice, and then Peter & Andreas (fresh from signing autographs, which Andreas had enlivened by signing alternatively as Madonna and as Gandhi) were on stage,  acting out a mock script with a slash subplot, and a guy next to me heckled them as they kissed. Andreas nearly squashed me as he ran down, grabbed the guy & kissed him, while Rick filmed the entire thing.

And. And. I read the above again, and realise just how many of these wonderful people are no longer with us. I loved Babylon 5 rather fiercely as a child, and I suppose I still do. I was always very fond the people who made it, because I always felt that they made it with love. Mira says it best, of course. I feel like I am losing a little part of my childhood.

Other things. I've found a flat. This is good news, as I have been at my parents' house for a ridiculous period of time, and it is doing mymental health no favours. I have taken up Pilates in the vain hope that it may help me hang on to sanity. I move in a month, and I am counting down.

Work continues ridiculously busy. I am tired & need a holiday, but see above re: sanity, lack thereof. I need to move, then go on leave.

*

Yuletide. This has the potential to make me happy, or incredibly stressed. I am hoping for the former.

*

Health. I'd like some. This chest thing can bugger off, I don't have the time.

Yuletide

So, after much flanick, I was able to write a few treats for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide . The reveal -

up, up the long delirious burning blue for [personal profile] destina
Fandom: Top Gun
Characters: Maverick/Iceman
Warnings: Major Character Death
Summary: Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth / And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings ... Maverick is re-assigned to Bosnia. He's not prepared for it, not in the least.
Salome Dances for [personal profile] selenak
Fandom: The Borgias
Characters: Lucrezia Borgia/Giulia Farnese, Cesare Borgia, Vannozza dei Cattanei
Warnings: obligatory Borgia incest warning
Summary: Lucrezia is quite taken by the lovely Giulia Farnese

The Winter Queen for [archiveofourown.org profile] sloppycronkite
Fandom: Game of Thrones (TV)
Characters: Daenerys Targaryen/Viserys Targaryen
Warnings: obligatory Targaryen incest warning
Summary: Daenerys knows it's just a matter of being patient. Things will be better once Viserys is king.

I am also able to thank my lovely Yuletide authors! I was doubly-blessed this year with not one, but two wonderful fics. Both of them are sweet and happy, and made me squeak with joy on Christmas Day. Thank you so much to [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth  and [archiveofourown.org profile] Serenade , you guys are awesome!

"Unless I'm very much mistaken..." by [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth
Formula 1 RPF, Senna/Prost.
This is my main fic, and absolutely wonderful. It's the Senna/Prost relationship through the eyes of a young fan, who goes to the Brands Hatch GP in the hope of winning Ayrton's affections for herself. I love this story to bits, it's absolutely brilliant. From the setting - it's Brands, you guys, I practically live there half the year these days! - to the flashes of the motorsport world, to the Senna/Prost relationship itself, this is hilarious and heart-warming.

Homecoming by [archiveofourown.org profile] Serenade
Seafort Saga - David Feintuch, Seafort/Tolliver
This is my lovely treat from Serenade (I totally knew it was you, lol!), who has managed the impossible: funny, happy fic in the Seafort Saga universe. I know, right?! I love it. Tolliver is fed up of Nick's unreasonable demands re: the redecoration of his office, so drags him to Ikea. This is cracky and hilarious.

*

A couple of [livejournal.com profile] yuletide recs. I haven't really had a chance to do much reading, but what I have read I have enjoyed a lot.

Please, please please by [archiveofourown.org profile] AdaptationDecay
John Lewis adverts
This is lovely! I love the adverts anyway, I think they're brilliant, and this fic manages to capture the spirit of them, and is also wickedly clever. It put a real smile on my face. Plus bonus sekkrit crossover!

Turn a New Page, Tear the Old One Out by [archiveofourown.org profile] shrift
Breakfast Club, Bender/Brian
Bender gets a new life, and how. Lovely and well-realised future fic.

kangeiko: (warming winter drink)
So, I've had to default on Yuletide this year. Yes, despite looking forward to it for months and months. Real life has spiralled out of control somewhat, and I needed to cut down on deadlines and obligations in order to be able to manage it. I figured it was better to default early and give my recipient a chance to receive a fic from someone who has had a chance to spend some time on it, rather than do it last minute. :/ I still hope to be able to participate in madness, and get some fics in, but no 'main' fic from me this year.

I did manage to do some writing while I was away, though.

Pilgrim's Progress is a Haven fic set after 1x13. Nathan makes things difficult for himself. Audrey Parker/Nathan Wournos, Duke Crocker/Nathan Wournos.

Tiger! Tiger! is the help-japan fic I have owed [profile] crossing_hades for approximately 84 billion years. It's Lyta, Garibaldi and Bester, set during the Telepath War. Anyone would think you were fighting a war.

I feel a vague sense of triumph for managing these two fics in what has essentially been a dry year. I still owe the ever-lovely [personal profile] amatara  a fic for help-japan, and I hope to be able to manage something for Yuletide Madness. But in terms of productivity, that's pretty much all I have in me at the moment. :/ If I have any inspiration it'll likely go towards the Top Gear/10 O'Clock Live crossover I have been working on since April, which I hope to finish before... well, next April. Hey, as long as there is some progress, right?
