Let me ask the stupid question of stupidity -

RPGS. What are they?

I know that [livejournal.com profile] athena25 plays one, but that appears to involve actual meeting up of people and actual play. So how does an online RPG work? I am similarly confused about [livejournal.com profile] theatrical_muse.

Also, what's the difference between an online RPG and a first-person round-robin?

It is, in fact, the two different parts of my geekdom failing to connect. I've done round-robins before. Does this mean I'd enjoy RPGs?

*clueless*

P.S. Still not fired.

Most online ones, fandom anyway, are really more like collaborative writing where you write the part of one character after consultation / on the hoof with anoher player writing theirs. It's very social, usually including plotting and chatting with lots of players at different times.

Theatrical muse... I've done that, and there you write a ficlet from your character in response to the challenges, but a lot of people also have their characters interact, though I rarely did.

Neither is anything like tabletop roleplaying, but then neither are computer game RPGs! Non-fandom rpging online that I've seen tends to be more like real life roleplaying though, having a GM (moderator) to decide the results of actions rather than the players plotting every detail.

Round robins... well I not seen them done separated by character, but one like that might well be similar to an online rpg.

I have nothing constructive to add except I. want. your. icon. I watched What have you done today on my large TV last night and cried again. There's just something about Hogg opening up those big red doors....

RPG, well in many ways it's like those improve games that you theatre types play, but with a varying degree of rules and a moderator in the shape of the GM.

Online RPG's usually aren't worth the name as there is very little roleplaying going on, although there's usually some if you can find it. But tabletop RPG allows the most freedom to improvise on behalf of the players and the GM, if you can describe it and it doesn't break the rules then you can do it.

Online RPG are a lot like collaberative storytelling the way you know it although there are people who do the tabletop thing but just do all the talking on line.

Oh you're also much less likely to get blokes pretending to be ninja catgirls in tabletop rather than in Online RPG's, although it's not unknown...
