If you are reading this, I have already died.

You may count upon it that Irina was the one to kill me. As I write this, she is my captive and entirely under my control. But I see her eyes when she looks up at me, even when I try to explain the true nature of our work. Irina used to understand that, or at least I thought she did. Now, where there was belief, there is only hatred for me and my goals. Yes, Irina may be the end of me yet.

Enough of my death. It matters little. What matters is our work, and if you are reading this, our efforts in Sevogda must have failed. It will be up to you to resurrect them.

Arrange to be in the Vatican on the first Monday of Lent. Stand directly beneath the image of St. Jerome upon the Sistine Chapel. You will be approached by someone else who has received a letter much like this; he will be able to help you.

And if you suspect that this man means to betray our work -- if his friendship with Jack Bristow or his sentimentality toward Nadia have crippled his thinking -- I trust you will know what steps to take.

I should warn you, if you have had second thoughts, he has similar instructions.

Dear Lady,

I must confess myself bewildered at your request. Naturally, I am most grateful that you would consider representing myself at a trial, but pray, which trial do you speak of, hm? At first upon receiving your letter I thought this would be yet another tiresome attempt by the Narns to plague my life - as if an Ambassador and Prime Minister of the great Centauri Republic would ever consent to appear in front of a tribunal consisting of a bunch of someone other than Centauri - but now Vir has alerted me to another possibility.

Let me assure you that if either of my former wives thinks Centauri Prime's position as a member of the Alliance means they are entitled to human divorce settlements, they should consider whether the mental condition of our dear late Emperor was not contagious. Moreover, my good friend Mr. Garibaldi, who has recently started a career as what he calls a "private eye" - which might or might not relate to a prophecy I once heard, so I find the expression most fascinating - informs me that it would be no problem to prove the ladies in question have a less than stellar reputation themselves.

But enough about these disagreeable matters. My lack of need for legal representation not withstanding, I would be happy to invite so charming a lady to share dinner with me. It has been too long since I was a proper Centauri and honored the gods as they should be honored, yes? Do tell me whether you can spare an hour or two.
