The year in various formats -

From [livejournal.com profile] athena25, the year as the first line of the first post of each month:

2005 is over - good bloody riddance. Here's to a fabulous 2006!

My latest posting has me working in an internet-free zone until the wee hours of the morning. The only reason I am online now is because I have several meetings back at the office, thank all that's holy.

I hardly ever post to [livejournal.com profile] feminist anymore. This isn't because I am any less a feminist, or because I have found a better forum to air my views. Rather, it's because of the pandemic descent into 'yeah but, no but' style of debate that seems to have infected much of the so-called 'scholarly' lj communities.

Quick update. I'm writing this on [livejournal.com profile] athena25's work laptop, 'cause my laptop has too many firewalls and encrption protocols to allow livejournal to actually function over dial-up. woe.

I'm really quite freaked out about tomorrow. Starting on a new client is quite nerve-wracking at the best of times, and this one is so new that they had to run a training day for them.

Am feeling miles better, thank all that's holy. I went to the doctor and put my foot down (read: cried like a small child) about the side effects, and he switched my meds to beta blockers. !

Ack. *holds head together with safetypins* I went to a friend's housewarming Sat night, had a glass of Pimm's and half a glass of pink champagne and spent today staring blankly at the walls. I think I've lost half of my braincells.

mmmm, v. sloshed now. had... stuff... on empty stomach. much love to all my friends. received flowers and wine and chocolates and cards and drinks and kisses and loveliness and am feeling v. loved. also, at 25, v. old.

I'm back! Didja miss me? Real life = TEH SUCK, except that it's over now and I am not worrying about it NO NOT AT ALL.

The sky is falling!!! *runs around like a mad thing* It's raining cats and dogs out there, so much like the infamous "Night of Many Floods" that it's freaky.

Internet broken for a few days - boo. Internet now fixed, due to exciting tech!skilled Athena - (*unplug & replug & kick a few times*) w00t!

Given that today has been spent flitting from one thing to the other, I'm amazed at how productive I've been.

From [livejournal.com profile] eye_of_a_cat, the year in FAQ format:

1. What did you do in 2006 that you'd never done before?
I... ended up in the 'majors' part of A&E, and I went to Rome (one the top 10 places I wanted to visit before I die). Oh, and I got an MSc.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I think so. My major NYR was 'acquire health', which I started to do towards the tail-end of this year. I will be making some more for the coming year - see below.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes, a friend of mine had a baby called Sophia, whom I haven't met yet.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes. My grandfather.

5. What countries did you visit?
I visited Germany to see [livejournal.com profile] monanotlisa, and Italy with my brother. I plan to do a whole lot more in the coming year!

6. What would you like to have in 2007 that you lacked in 2006?
I'd like to be CIPFA exam-qualified. Please, god. I need the exams to be over.

7. What dates from 2006 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Nothing from early in the year sticks in my mind, really, but later on - the exam dates for this year, August 31st - handing in my completed MSc dissertation - and Dec 14th, when I graduated. Other things don't have dates associated with them, just the days, if you see what I mean.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I completed my MSc, I went to the doctor and submitted myself to an endless array of tests, then transferred to a private doctor to do it all again. Doing it once was bad enough, but I view the second time as a real achievement of will power.

9. What was your biggest failure?
I want to say failing an exam in June, but given that no one other than me actually counts that as an exam fail, that may be pointless. I think - not being as happy as I expexted to be.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
YES. Oh, god, yes. Did the endless cardiological tests not tip you off? Also, there was the CHEST INFECTION OF DOOM, which might be to blame for it all.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
I bought a new computer! She is spiffy. Also, my Rome holiday, which I richly deserved.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My flatmate's, and my friends', who supported me through a whole lot. Also, my mum, who appears to be a saint.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Er - an ex-friend's, who behaved in such an appalling manner that I have made a real effort to cut him out of my life.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Rent and loan repayments took about 80% of everything.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
I was so unbelievably thrilled to be going to Rome this year, it really left me giddy. Also, graduating. And passing my first set of exams at the beginning of the year! That was spiffy.

16. What song will always remind you of 2006?
'dancing shoes' by the arctic monkeys. You know it's true.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder?
Happier, I think. I'm not going crazy, I'm not imagining a whole host of things being wrong with me, and the things that ARE wrong with me can be fixed. Plus, I was clinically depressed last year, so.
b) thinner or fatter? I don't know. I want to say 'fatter', because I had the CHEST INFECTION OF DOOM last year that left me unable to eat or sleep.
c) richer or poorer? Richer, if you count being in less debt as acquiring riches.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Hanging out with my friends.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Stressed over things that can't be helped.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
Christmas Day I spent asleep at my parents' house, occasionally eating and/or watching bad 80s movies. BLISS.

21. Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?
My mum, probably.

22. Did you fall in love in 2006?
No. I have, however, decided that it might not be the end of the world if I do. Which is progress, right?

23. How many one-night stands?
Er, actual ones with sex? *thinks* One? Ones that didn't get quite that far? Er... four? Oh, I am such a floozy...

24. What was your favorite TV programme?
Hmmm. House? I dunno. I didn't watch much tv-on-tv this year, more dvd box-sets, really.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I don't think so. I think less of some people than I did then, but that's life.

26. What was the best book you read?
OMFG, I don't remember! I am so screwed.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Take That still exist?! (for a given definition of 'greatest'...)

28. What did you want and get?
I wanted to get my MSc for so long, it blew my mind when I actually did. I want the actual certificate, now... Also, my father to get better.

29. What did you want and not get?
To pass all my exams - in my head, I didn't get that, even though it's just been delayed for a bit. Also, to get health. Ditto.
And - my grandfather to get better.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Erm. I liked 'Casino Royale', and 'Howl's Moving Castle', and... what other films did I see this year? I have no idea.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was twenty-five, and I was at work, actually. That weekend, I went to Pret-a-portea at The Berkeley with friends, and we had a blissful afternoon of champagne tea.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
More money/ More health? No - MORE TIME!!! More time would have been useful. There's so much stuff I want to do!

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2006?
Alternating between professional & polished, and manky & ill. Yup, that about covers it.

34. What kept you sane?
My friends, livejournal, and a vast quantity of drugs.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Erm... I... don't know. Am I supposed to know? is that how this works? *puzzled*

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Oh, god, where do I start?
a) the 'debate' about veils that sparked an outburst of Islamophobia
b) global warming and Bush's idiocy on the matter
c) the anti-abortion law that was proposed in South Dakota
d) some nonsense about rape stats that came out - and an increase in the number of people who think that it is partly the woman's fault.
e) the economist's op-ed about the pointlessness of fairtrade products. Poorly written, inaccurate and damaging. GRRRRR.
f) the complete inability of my colleagues to understand that if you have not been personally discriminated against IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT DISCRIMINATION DOESN'T EXIST. Oh my god. *headdesk*

37. Who did you miss?
A lot of people, but namely my friends.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Did I meet anyone new this year? *thinks* Clive from work is lovely, as is new girl Becca, and I got to hang out with Selena and Mona, although I knew them online so that doesn't count, and American!Josh, I suppose.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2006:
Don't sweat the small stuff. It's the big stuff that kills ya.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
'I'm a bitch' - and it's nothing to be ashamed of.

New Year's Resolutions:
1. I will acquire health, through a variety of means. I will go to my hospital appointments. I will stop cancelling physio appointments. I will take my pills and my vitamins. I will remember to eat breakfast and sleep an appropriate amount. I will remember that caffeinne is not an adequate food substitute.

2. I will style my hair and put on make-up every workday, without fail. I will keep a powder compact in my bag, and I will remember that spending money on a haircut is actually a requirement and not a frivolity, as I need to look professional. This makes me feel instantly better about myself and boosts my confidence, and there is NO EXCUSE for not making the effort.

3. I will say 'yes' to more things that will lead to fun for me, and 'no' to more things that will lead to work for me. I will stop running away when people ask me out. I will actually go to work social events.

4. I will read more books. If there are books out there that you think I should read, please rec them for me here!! Once upon a time I used to read the book reviews of various newspapers and magazines, but those days are gone. Today, I rely on my flist to help me out. Go on, guys, list as many books as occur to you, and of them I will pick 30-50 and work my way through them. (Book list to follow at some point in the new year...)
