Dexter
Yes, I really am this slow, don't mock me. I now have the entire first season, so I'll be watching it bit by bit, as the mood strikes.
The first episode was... so not what I expected. I was very intrigued by the relationship between boy!Dexter and his father - that's definitely the relationship that hit me straight on, from the get-go - but was mildly disappointed in the character of Dexter. I was expecting someone a lot less... I don't know. I don't want to say 'smug', but that's how he came across - a city-boi-wanker with a killing fetish, essentially. I think this may have something to do with the actor playing him. Now, he's name has fallen straight out of my head, but I'm sure that he's the uptight Christian guy (David?) from Six Feet Under. Am I right? I'm right, aren't I? Anyway, he's got a bit too much of that placid, I'm-so-much-better-than-you thing going on, which works if you're neurotic as all hell, but rubs me up the wrong way in a psychopath. I think I keep expecting psychpaths to be charismatic, or something. I don't know. But Dexter gave me the creeps. Not in a psycho!killer way, but in a peeping-tom, wank-off-by-your-window sort of way.
It might be his hair.
The relationship with the sister I also didn't buy, mainly because I don't think she got the best showcase in this episode. She came off as a bit stupid, to be honest, but she shared an upbringing with Dexter. What's up with that? She wasn't diddled by daddy, was she? 'Cause that would disappoint me. I think I like Dexter's daddy a whole lot. Why do I always end up liking the reaaaaaally crazy ones??
Anyway, this brings me to Julie Benz's character, whose name I can't remember because I was too busy staring. OMG, vulnerable!Darla!! It's going to take me a little while to get over the squee. Although I hope that she turns out to have a spine of steel or something real soon, 'cause if she's as helpless as the first episode makes her look, I may kill things.
Oh! The killer. Yucky, but cool. I also liked the whole 'he's being friendly' thing with the doll in the fridge.
Overall - NOT the strongest series opener I've ever seen, and I think that's because of the character of Dexter himself. However, I'm assured that he'll grow on me, so I'll stick with it and see.

But, mostly, Rube!!!!!!
BSG
Yes, I'm years behind, shaddup. Can we hear a big - OH MY F'ING GOD????? That epiosde may have actually traumatised me. It makes me want to hug Sharon. It makes me want to kill people. I makes me want to write crazy-in-love Tyrol/Sharon/Helo threesomes/triangles of obsession and protection, because OMFG. Also, Baltar and not!Six!!!! *snuggles her* I want to shoot Cain the head. I want to shoot all her fucked up military boys in the head. I am terrified that this might have happened to Galactica if there weren't civilians they had to look after (and we got a glimpse of that in the mini-series). I cheered when Helo and Tyrol killed that rapist. I booed when they were arrested. I cheered again when Adama said that he was getting his men back.
I may have cried a little during the actual attempted-rape scene, and not!Six reaching for a slice of fruit. God, this fandom doesn't hesitate to just stomp all over your heart and then spit at you while you're down, does it? *loves it anyway*

And now, back to my reading. *is exhausted*

Sucker-puncher of an episode, and you can see how this would have been Galactica without the civilians - think of Kara and Lee using an image of Sharon for target practice an episode earlier, and you're on your way to the dehumanization which makes the fate of the Pegasus Six model (called Gina though the name never makes it on screen for some reason) possible.

Date: 2007-01-16 03:04 pm (UTC)Is his brother going to come into it? I'm guessing that he is. There's gonna be twistedness to rival Alias, isn't there? I bet there is. Uhuh. *nods*
Re: Rita, wait and see. Also, the supporting characters in general turn out to be fantastic (and not exactly like Dexter (and we) sees them in the pilot), which starts in the second episode.
I'm really looking forward to that now. *g* I haven't had a chance to just sit down and watch anything more - crazy madness on this end - but it's good to know that much twistedness awaits.
think of Kara and Lee using an image of Sharon for target practice an episode earlier,
Yeah, exactly. I'm really pacing myself with BSG 'cause I wanna have a nice long think on the nastiness of it all. It's saying quite a few horrible things about human nature, and it's terrifying that I can't disagree...
