This is an open letter to [livejournal.com profile] kahr_ramsus:

Dear Andrew,

I want to clarify a few things.

1) I didn't ignore your last post because I didn't have a come-back. I did, and I still do. I ignored it because it was rude, tangential and completely pointless. I don't owe you an explanation. However, I will offer one anyway, in the spirit of good will.

2) If you wish to call an entire people 'weak' and 'stupid', you might be accused of racism. The person doing the accusing would be right. What, you didn't know that you could be racist towards other people of the same skin-colour? Look it up.

Your comments about Britain's govt, however, made me laugh. Do you honestly believe that people dislike Blair because he is too soft? We dislike him because he is a two-faced liar that is so busy licking Bush's arse that he can't take the time to attend to his own country. We dislike him because he did nothing about Camp X-Ray, which is in clear breach of several UN conventions. We dislike him because he has become hawkish and right-wing.

3) This is my journal. I pay money for it. Even if I didn't, it would still be mine. I can say anything I wish to say here, including calling you a bigoted buffoon. Other than the alliteration, this would all be fine. I posted it publicly (i.e. not friends-locked) because I didn't actually care whether you saw my post or not. After all, all it contained was a link to your comment and a list of exclamation points. Not exactly rocket science.

4) Posting on [livejournal.com profile] feminist means that you receive all the comments posted to your OP in your inbox. I didn't post on [livejournal.com profile] feminist because your fabulously imperialist, hawkish muddle of a theory was not the least bit relevant towards rape prevention, which was what the OP was about. My response to your tirade would not be particularly relevant to the OP either. This is why it was not posted there.

5) Most importantly, the reason I have no wish to discuss gun-control policy or, even more importantly, the death penalty, with you is because it would be the equivalent of dicussing whether torture is acceptable. There is absolutely nothing you could say that would make me think that arming children - because children can be raped too, and wasn't your OP about rape prevention via a gun? - is a good idea. There is nothing you can say that would make me consider the death penalty as anything other than barbaric.

Commenting about this is pointless. I did not, contrary to your opinion, attack all of conservatism. That's like attacking all of liberalism: it is a pointless rhetorical exercise and would not, incidentally, be true of my beliefs. I respect people whose beliefs in when life begins leads them to a pro-life position. I disagree with them vehemently, but I respect them. I respect people who choose to be pacifists. I couldn't do it, but I respect them. I respect people who choose to enlist in the armed forces, because they want to protect their country. I may not agree with their choices, but I respect them.

There are only a few things I have no respect and no tolerance for. Your position on the death penalty is one of them.

Your comments about the lack of death penalty - and that all who think it is barbaric and outdated are 'soft' and 'weak' and incapable of running their own country - made me shake my head in disgust. This is precisely the sort of rhetoric used by any large, thuggish group before it sets out to conquer and pillage. At the risk of invoking Godwin's Law, all that talk about 'weak' nations and 'weak' races makes you sound like a neo-Nazi.

America is one of only two countries in the world to not ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. It is also one of a tiny handful that executes children. Your support of this barbarity disgusts me. There is nothing you can say that will make me think you and your earlier post as any less reprehensible. There is nothing you can say that will make me think your position on these issues as anything less than morally repugnant.

I did not answer your last post because I do not enjoy making catagorical statements such as this one:

You disgust me. Your skewed idea of morality disgusts me. We have nothing to discuss.

Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelled of elderberries.

Now go away before I taunt you a second time.

In honour of my actually making a categorical statement (not preceeded or suceeded by "except in cases such as..." or "of course, you could also argue that..."), I am using the Toby icon. Because sometimes a person has to put their foot down and say - no more discussion. This is an absolute right, or an absolute wrong.

*is happy*

I would do the little dance of victory but I was preparing to go and shoot him in the groin and then put him in an electric chair to prove to him the babarity (i.e. with beards) of his position.

Wandered here from [livejournal.com profile] feminist. I think you two should continue your dialogue; it was interesting.
