I am stuck at home waiting for several people to turn up. I am ostensibly still working on the Multiverse fic still sitting in pieces on my hard-drive (I am up to version 5, now, and I still hate it. It's due by the end of today, bollocks.), but actually I want to be outside, cavorting in the sunshine or whatever it is the cool kids are doing these days.

Yesterday my daddy got discharged from hospital super-early, which is great. I went to see him, and he's doing well, resting at home. My brother and I then went to see Terminator, which was Not Bad (tm). Don't think about it too hard or the entire timeline collapses in a big limp pile, but other than that...

I am currently reading "Flood" by Stephen Baxter, which I picked up yesterday and am already 1/4 of the way through. I'm really enjoying it. It's a 'what if climate change causes huge amounts of flooding in low-lying places such as, say, London' type of book, much like Robinson's 'Science in the Capitol' series but with more emergencies. I guess I'm in an apocalyptic mood right now. (Also, horror short stories, but I don't know of any good anthologies. I've already read all of Stephen King's short stories. Recs, pls?)

From [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63, meme time!

List 10 platonic male/female relationships in fiction that you enjoy. Rules:

1. They interact in canon, preferably in a significant (apply your own interpretation of such) way.
2. They are not related. They can, however, view each other as surrogate family.
3. Neither has confessed or implied romantic love for the other in canon.
4. They have not dated, been married, had sex, or made out in canon, on purpose, and of their own free will.
5. A popular fanon ship is ok (though preferably not your ship) but a canon pairing you wish were just friends is out.
6. Try to avoid using the same character or series twice.

1. John Sheridan & Susan Ivanova (Babylon 5). How could I not list these two awesome people first? I love how close they are, and the utter trust they have in each other. I also love how they are not remotely interested in each other romantically. John is in love with Delenn, and Susan is still trying to get over Talia and/or Marcus. I'm so pleased that JMS didn't try to build anything else into their relationship, they are just completely perfect the way they are, down to her going after him on Z'ha'dum because he's her captain and her friend, damnit.

2. Channon and Spider (Transmetropolitan). Aahahahaha. We (and Spider) first meet Channon when she's in mid-strip in a skeezy dive. She later on becomes Spider's assistant and then his bodyguard. While his relationship with Yelena evolves into something more, with Channon it solidifies into something concretely platonic but just as strong. She would kill for him, and he loves her fiercely. Plus, she doesn't hesitate to call him out on his shit when he needs it.

3. Uhura and Sulu (TOS books). I'm still a little confused, brain-wise about the reboot and what this means for all the canon that's littering my brain, especially about the other characters. But Uhura and Sulu and Chekov are some of my favourite platonic relationships on the show and most especially in the books, where they respect each other and support each other and tease the crap out of each other and there's not a hint of romantic interest in them at all. I decided to go for Uhura and Sulu because Chekov being so much younger always gave me the impression that his relationship with Uhura was a more tentative, mentor/student one. Whereas both Uhura and Sulu are of equal rank, and have a million hobbies apiece, and get some fab stuff to do in the books. (Although not, sadly, in the TV series or movies.)

4. Buffy and Giles (Buffy). Is he the only male who doesn't show an interest in her? He could well be. Anyway, I love their relationship. It starts off in a very strict, formal fashion, progresses to a surrogate father role, and eventually ends up at something much more equal and balanced. I also love the bit in S4 where Buffy goes to Giles to ask him for help and finds him with his friend (Olivia?) and informs him that he's not allowed a personal life because he's very very old and it's gross. Well put.

5. Mrs Landingham and Jed Bartlet (The West Wing). I love all the relationships on this show, but a lot of them have some sort of romantic interest, however unresolved. This one, however, most emphatically does not, and still manages to make me cry like a small, small child. "Why are you being so mean to me?" / "Because you never had a big sister and you need one." // "But if you don't do it because you are scared, because you think you won't win - well, God, Jed, I don't even want to know you."

6. Jadzia Dax and Ben Sisko (DSN). I'm rewatching DSn with [livejournal.com profile] queenspanky at the moment, and rediscovering the Joy of Jadzia (there should be a book).

7. Guinan & Picard (TNG). You can tell I'm on a ST kick, can't you? Picard's relationship with Guinan is apparently beyond friendship, beyond family. We don't get to see a whole lot of it on the show, but one scene I do particularly remember: Guinan telling Riker to let him go after he's become Locutus. Because she loves him, and she will.

8. Jane & Charlie Udder (Deadwood). I have no words for how much I love this friendship. Even after Bill is no longer there to hold them together, these two gravitate towards each other to prop each other up and watch each other's backs. And I love that he doesn't ever try to imply that she should clean up or act more like a lady - she's Jane, and he accepts her just the way she is.

9. Sydney and Dixon (Alias). I'm going to be predictable here. I also love Sydney's relationship with Marshall, but it's really her friendships with Francie and Dixon that define early Alias for me. It's all about Sydney's determination to hold on to her life, and as that is gradually worn down throughout the seasons those relationships strain and break until the CIA/APO is all she has left. I think her friendship with Dixon suffered a huge, huge setback during Season 2, and it took such a long with for that to be repaired, it broke my heart.

10. Veronica & Weevil (Veronica Mars). I know that some will argue that Weevil was interested in Veronica during the show, but we don't see that on-screen, so it didn't happen for me. They work so well for me as platonic BFFs it makes my head spin.

There definitely should be a book about the Joy of Jadzia. And as you can see from yesterday's post we have several overlapping relationships in common. :)

Re: Picard and Guinan, two of my own favourite scenes between them are the one from Measure of a Man, where she helps him figure out that the ultimate consequence if Data is declared property is the creation of a slave race, and the one from Yesterday's Enterprise where she asks him to risk universes and timelines on her say-so. And he does. (Oh, and opening scene from Rascals where Picard is geeking about about his ancient pottery findings and we get:
Guinan: We just had three days shore leave and you spent them all crawling in caves.
Picard (happily holding up shards): Guinan, these are over 700 years old!
Guinan: So is my father

is very cute too.

Mrs. Landingham and Jed Bartlet: awwwww, yes. Best big sister ever.
