Right Your Fandom Wrongs
3 May 2005 12:17 amToday is Day Of Flooding Your Flist.
selenak pointed me towards
yahtzee63's livejournal. Now, I've read much of yahtzee's fic, but was unaware that she was on lj. I did the standard 'friending-and-then-reading-back-posts-for-fun-goodness' thing that one does whenever one friends someone new. *waves at
yahtzee63 in the process*
Now,
yahtzee63 has come up with a work of genius, wherein you right your fandom wrongs. This is all highly relevant, as I was having Thoughtful and In-Depth (tm) conversations a while back with
kita0610 about my need to erase the chidori nick and all terrible fic I wrote under it. I'm at a bit of a loss as to how I can erase some of my even earlier stuff (I'm thinking about the vast quantities of truly awful B5 fic I wrote back when I was still a teen, oh my dear god), but this is even better. The idea is to go back, take one story that you wrote three or four years ago and remix it so it's actually good.
I have many theories as to why I'm in fandom (namely that it allows you to play god and fix the universe's mistakes), and this sounds fabulous. You can fix your own mistakes! No more cringing at that truly terrible fic featuring a thinly-veiled Mary Sue that you wish you could obliterate! Now, you can poke fun at it and then point people to another take on the story idea.
So. As near as I can figure, 'Metempsychosis: Dies Irae' is the earliest fic I wrote for the B5 fandom that actually saw the light of day, written in the Dark Ages of 1998 (I was, what, sixteen? Seventeen?). It's... bad. It's bad in a way that "OMG 'visceral' is such a cool word, I've never heard it before!!!!one111!!!" doesn't adequately describe it.
Ah, but then we have 'Homecoming', which is the sprawling epic that I will never ever finish in its current state. The idea for this fic spans three volumes, the first set in London and Sunnydale, the second in Basingstoke and Los Angeles, and the third in Edinburgh and ... somewhere else. It was an alternate Season 4, incorporating original characters, the afore-mentioned Pausanias and OMG "She's not a Mary Sue, honest!" Vamp!Liz. Liz... well, I have no words for how hard I tried to prevent Liz from turning into a Mary Sue. Alas, 'twas not to be. At any rate, the main problem with 'Homecoming' was the constant swings in POV. Spike, Angel, Buffy, Cordelia, the carrot on the left... oh, they all got their moment in the limelight. It makes me shudder.
Then there's... OK, you get the idea. Mainly B5, quite a bit of earlier Buffy, even some of my X-Men and HP fanfic really, really needs a coat of paint. Have a look at my earlier stuff (don't mock me too much for it), and leave a comment as to which story you think would be most deserving of a remix.
It's like spring cleaning, only... not. :)

Date: 2005-05-04 10:46 pm (UTC)Thankfully, the first first fanfic I wrote was burned. Or shredded. Well, one or the other. Handwritten, thinly-veiled TOS het porn. *shudder* I made my younger brother proof-read it for me and probably scarred the poor boy for life. *shudders some more*
And don't think you can hide your early work just because it's in German, missy, this is what Babefish was invented for! (ah, the hours of amusement over inadvertently too-literal translation... *happy sigh*)
