Cake!

I have spent my first weekend in Malawi lazing about, drinking coffee and rooibos tea, eating scones, listening to music and watching crappy DVDs. I wonder if this is what my boss had in mind when he shipped me out here? Anyway, it's only for a couple of months, I'm back for Christmas. However, I miss Halloween and Guy Fawkes! UNACCEPTABLE. I love Halloween. I LOVE IT. I love dressing up, and going to parties and generally indulging. And then a week later getting mulled wine into me around a bonfire and getting all ready for the cold. However lovely Malawi is, there is no cold, no bonfires, and no Halloween or Samhain or anything similar.

So, naturally, I planned for this, and brought Lovecraft's Omnibus 1: At the Mountains of Madness with me. I'm also trying to persuade the other ex-pats here to have a Halloween party. We're from all the corners of the globe (well, all corners of Europe, plus one Canadian), so my main selling point is the cake. CAKE! I am trying to persuade [twitter.com profile] saharacook to scan my graveyard cake recipe (carefully saved from Good Food for several years) so I can attempt it. It'll cost a small fortune, with every imported ingredient worth its weight in gold, but it'll be worth it, n'est ce pas?

I found a picture of it from a couple of years ago:

chocolate graveyard cake

Yes, yes. You are correct. That is indeed a CHOCOLATE GRAVEYARD CAKE with MERINGUE GHOSTS. And very delicious it was too. What with all the power cuts here I'm not sure I'll be able to get to the final product this year, but I can have a go, right?

I had a fab day today. I don't really post much, and when I do it's generally depression-filled, so I imagine my shock - nay, astonishment! - when I had three good days in a row. Impossible, I swear.

The weekend was blissfully quiet. [livejournal.com profile] athena25 was away for LARPing shenanigans, so I took the opportunity to be domestic. And by 'domestic', I don't mean that I sat at home, which seems to have been the pattern of my winter. I was at home for some of it, but I was primarily cooking.

My food joy, let me tell you it. )

So after I finished eating the local Sainsbury's out of their fresh produce section, I decided to do some housework-type things. Not the 'I am depressed, see me polish' type of work, but opening up all the windows, doing fresh loads of washing, doing a little weeding, even - gasp! - leaving the back door open to air out the place.

I even found the time and energy to go to the gym for a truly punishing two hour session that left me unable to walk this morning. It was fabulous. A month's worth of lazing about, made up for in one morning's worth of pain and exertion. It was wonderful, I tell you.

I also had a mini clear-out, shifting loads of books and DVDs that were cluttering up the place.

Today I woke up and had a comedy morning, where I was convinced it was a Sunday because it was sunny. D'oh! Once I finally figured out that I should shift my arse out of bed, I got up... and nearly fell flat on my face, due to the afore-mentioned overly enthusiastic exertions yesterday. Got to work, things Not On Fire (tm) - knock on wood - and I am out tonight with my gay boyfriend.

So, anyway. Now that I am feeling vaguely human (due almost entirely to the fact that it has been sunny for a few days in a row, which basically means that whole bout of lethargy was due to a vitamin D deficiency), I am all-aglow about spring. I am even considering writing again. Imagine it! Me, back with a pen in my hand! Don't all fall down with shock.

Safe to say at this point: I'm officially off hiatus.

So what did I miss?

A very happy Thanksgiving to all those celebrating it today! I hope you have a very lovely turkey day.

[livejournal.com profile] athena25 and I are off to The Diner tomorrow eve to partake of turkey ourselves.

If you are eating nice things today, tell me all about them, I have culinary curiosity.

I also can't wait for it to be proper autumn/winter, and for Starbucks to start their gingerbread lattes again. I know that it's terribly pants of me to support them as I should be supporting independent coffee shops instead, but I support independent coffee shops 7 days a week. Starbucks is entitled to a seasonal visit from me, clutching a peppermint candycane and sipping gingerbread in a MUG. It's like Christmas in a warm, jazzy, blues-y, massively commercialised environment. Just like Christmas, in other words!

Also, because everyone is doing it and because it looks like massive amount of fun, I give you: the character love meme!

It goes something like this: Name a character, and I will tell you in at least 100 words why I love that character.

I have all the fandoms in the world, so knock yourselves out. The usual suspects include: the Jossverses, West Wing, Harry Potter, Scrubs, Red Dwarf, House M.D., Alias, Babylon 5, Star Trek (all incarnations), Doctor Who (Nine and Ten), Lost, Nip/Tuck... the list goes on. If you're on my flist, chances are we'll share about 80% fandom interests. I'm a fandom floozy that way. :)

No no no this is a complete disaster!

I'm going to starve to death. Quite possibly in a literal way, as bananas comprise about 1/3 of my daily calorie intake.

On a more serious note, this spells disaster for millions of people who are dependent on this crop.
