Fables #40 - #49

I am back, and well enough to squee. W00t!
Ah, Fables, how I have missed thee! Or, to be more accurate, how I have missed Bigby. I stopped reading after #40, 'cause I was so pissed off with the idea of Geppetto as the Adversary, and it's only once #48 and #49 came out, with the lovely Bigby, that I had an incentive to catch up on what's been going on in Fabletown.
I was really pleased that we got to see some more of the non-European fables, although it does Joss the Aladdin fic I'd been writing something chronic. Ah, well. Sinbad was luscious, and I adored King Cole in his new official capacity. And the djinn! The djinn rocked! As did Frau thingiewhatsit, the nameless witch. Aah, she's scary and wonderful, and the whole logic of it makes so much sense: if you can't win the game, change the rules. Captain Kirk would be proud.
Little Red Riding Hood, OTOH, pissed me off. I liked the plucky heroine and the evil Baba Yaga version! What was with giving us the 'real' Red as some sort of sappy, soppy, helpless little kitten? Grrr.
Speaking of sappy, June and her wooden boy should have been awful, but instead was absolutely lovely, and made me want to write fic for them. I felt for poor June so much in that last panel, I was practically in tears myself.
So, to recap: individual stories - the Arabian Nights, the wooden romance (forget the name), and Wolves = fantastic. The arc with Boy Blue going into the Homelands? Pants. The Adversary? Pants. Pinnochio? Obviously brain-washed with the new, 'cleans whiter and with more loyalty' magic Geppetto has at his disposal. Also, Prince Charming is a jerk.
That is all.
No drugs in me today, tralalala! Tomorrow, yes, tomorrow is a day of drugs (tm), but no drugs in me today, tralalala! *dances*

Date: 2006-06-02 08:44 pm (UTC)It took you this long to realize that Prince Charming is a jerk? Or has he done something egregiously stupid since the Arabian Nights three-parter (that's the last that I've read, oh woe).
Actually, I liked that Gepetto is the Adversary. Because it's kind of intersting how he's an incredibly powerful monster like Baba Yaga, the Snow Queen, or frankly Bigby -- he's just a man.
That actually makes him more scary, imo.

Date: 2006-06-02 10:34 pm (UTC)Well, I always knew he was a complete womaniser and just a scumbag to women in general, from the first issue onwards. But he was really crappy towards Boy Blue, who completed a really dangerous mission. He's not only a bad leader, he's a dangerous leader - he sends people off on missions when he doesn't really care about them, or the mission, really. Just himself. I mean, I knew he was self-centred, but not to this extent. (In my head, people who run for public office must have some sense of civil duty... right? RIGHT???)
Anyway. He's a jerk.
RE: Gepetto
But no motivation is given! I mean, no real non-psychotic motivation. Why is he doing all this? It starts off making sense, and then all of a sudden he's conquering kingdoms and killing people and not caring. I mean, the Geppetto I know wouldn't be able to cope with that on a psychological level. He'd just shut down. He's a dad, and they made him into a Frankenstein. To make him the adversary, they dehumanised him.
(This could be because I really liked Geppetto as a kid - I thought Pinnochio was really really naughty for all he did. Although that could be the influence of Communism (tm) drumming home the importance of filial duty.)
