Yep, still at one with the mid-90s lurrrrve.

Fic rec:
For the Greater Good by Wendy Richards (at Anne's Place, registration required - adult fic)

This fic is brilliant. Premise: a fragment of an exploded planet is hurtling towards Earth, and only Superman can stop it. The problem? The fragment is from Krypton and is made from pure kryptonite. Even if Superman manages to stop it, it's a suicide mission...

This is a nice long fic, set a few years after Lois & Clark get married and have two small children. It explores both how the world takes Superman for granted after a while - and how his family doesn't. It also has a really fun explanation for the complete lack of death in this story (yeah, okay, maybe I shouldn't have told you that, but this isn't a death!fic and even knowing that didn't diminish from its impact) - actual made-up plasma science, which might be a little bit better than what's used on sci-fi shows...

As I said, this isn't a death!fic - i.e. Clark doesn't die. But that's almost besides the point, in a way, as the fic isn't about whether or not he survives - he always survives - but how he will react when he thinks that he won't. Moreover, how will Lois & Perry & Jimmy react when they think that he won't - especially if there is plenty of time to let it sink in. This isn't a last-minute split-second decision - this is something deliberate and protracted. It's agonising to read, but in a very good way.

I'm also impressed that this fic managed to make the 'adult' bits so completely necessary to the emotional development of the characters. It feels very natural indeed. Wendy Richards has a light touch in those scenes, almost as if the emotional caution of the characters is leaching into the writing of their last night together.

It's - yeah. Just go and read it.

Vid Rec:
La Tortura by Mad Dog Lane (at Anne's Place - no registration needed, general access)

Ah, this vid is very fun. The song is by Shakira, and even though it's not in English it manages to convey a story: Lois & Clark and their push-pull relationship throughout the years. It's sexy and emotional and a lot of fun. Go watch!

When the World Finds Out by CC Aiken (at Anne's Place - registration needed)

This is a really lovely, well thought-out story. I'm not sure why it was written as an adult fic rather than a gen one, because it doesn't need the sex bits at all. The premise is seemingly simple: Clark is put in a position where he has to use his powers in front of TV cameras, or let Lois die. In reality, this fic doesn't just focus on that one moment, but on constructing the entire world and everything that led up to it. This isn't a twenty-something Lois & Clark - they're in their fifties, and they have grown-up children. They have a life together, that seems an entity all of its own when threatened by the whole Superman myth.

What I especially enjoyed about this fic was the care and attention paid to the supporting characters: Jimmy, Perry, Alice and the kids all seem like real people, different and individual, yet (those that were on the show) are still obviously themselves. The little touches did it for me: Jimmy, still a little dorky and hiding in a coat closet; Lara and Marta being so unable to cook that 'dinner from the girls' is more of a threat than a treat; young Jonathan's focus on saving the whales; Perry's inability to stay away from the newsroom; Alice's careful eyes during the nightmares scenario that reveals Clark to the world. Most of all, though, I loved Clark in this. He was amazing - thoughtful, and brave, and still very human with all his fear at losing himself in favour of Superman.

This is a nice long story, and really something to curl up with. Other than the sex scenes - once again, not needed - it could make for a really nice episode of the series. There's plenty of introspection, but you never get the feeling that the characters are sitting around navel-gazing - they are vibrant and active and full of life. Highly recommended.

I've taken to watching Season 1 of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. Basically, a few months ago [livejournal.com profile] selenak posted a fab post about the first season and it made me wildly nostalgic, so I went and bought it. I watched the show when I was a very young teen, and I thought - well, I loved it then.

And, you know what? It's just as fabulous as I remember it.

First off, Dean Cain was one of my earliest crushes (for real - I had stickers of him & Teri Hatcher on my Eng Lit folders, right next to pictures of Tom Cruise from Interview with a Vampire) and it's amazing to discover that his smile still makes me melt a little. There's just something very wholesome about him. Of course, I don't give a hoot about Superman, but Clark Kent? Awwww.

Also, Lois. Lois was basically who I wanted to be, down to the ludicrously 90s bob haircut. Of course, I never got that haircut because - hello, high maintenance - but what I did get was just as high maintenance and just plain bad. Boy, was I glad when it grew out. But, moreover, Lois was strong and sassy and could have crushes, just like a little girl, which made me relate. She didn't have huge Enduring Loves (tm), she had crushes, and she had friends who wanted to be more than friends. It made the whole concept of Romance slightly more acceptable. (Bear in mind that I was a new teen, and was not that keen on boys - or girls, for that matter.) Also, she had a cool job. Lois Lane - Investigative Reporter. I mean, honestly, how fabulous was that? Definitely a better role model than anyone from Neighbours.

So, I'm probably biased in my love for this show, as it's so warm and fuzzy in the first season, with the original and best Jimmy Olsen, with Cat Grant and the Arm Muscles of Doom, and with the amazing Martha and Jonathan Kent. Also, because I am so definitely not a fan of Smallville. But I do recommend it, for glorious, uncomplicated Sunday-afternoon fun.
